I need a new ECM for my truck but there are probably some things I should research first and I thought this would be a good place to do that. Dealer want's $350.00 and 1 week delivery because it has to come from the U.S. I'm in Canada.(northern Ontario). Can't I just get one from any other F150 that is EFI as long as it is the 5.0L AOD tranny? Also, there is a calibration sticker on the door frame with two sets of numbers. What do these numbers represent exactly. Are they the computer's serial or model number? If I get a computer from a truck that has a different calibration number, will it still work? A friend has an '87 EFI F150 5.0L AOD and said I could use the ECM from it. Would that work? Thanks
Guy ,
The calibration codes are there for a reason . As a production run moves along different parts are used , this is why matching is important . A ECM from another vehicle may work , but if its calibration is not the same I can guarantee you will have some problems . I know living in Northern Ont it isnt a short hop across the border to get a new ECM . Let me ask you how you determined your ECM has died ? I know they do fail , but 99% of the time they dont . A little history and some more info may save you a little ?

I've been having idling problems with my truck for some time now. I have replaced the IAC, Map, o2, the egr is fine(ran with it blanked off and no difference and the engine running self test checks out ok). I also switched all other components with another F150 (temporarily)and still had the problem. Vac lines are ok, intake manifold gasket is ok, new fuel filter, fuel pressure's ok. I decided to take it to the dealer. They diagnosed it for a whole day, said they installed a different ECM (one they had on hand but couldn't sell because it was used) and the problem went away. So that is how I came to the conclusion of needing a new ECM. I realize that the calibrarion number is of great importance and you would think that every speed density controlled 5.0L would have the same ECM especially if the computer is calibrated to the engine's caracteristics. Every 5.0L should have the same caracteristics.
And one more thing. The service dept. manager said it is possible there was a short in one of the components I replaced(MAP,IAC,O2)and as some of these send outputs to the computer, this could have fried a circuit resulting in a failed computer. Now, shouldn't the ECM revert to it's default(limp mode) operating mode? I told him this but he said no.
Guy ,
The EEC IV will revert to what is called FMEM ( Failure Mode Effects Management ) if in fact it is totally dead . I resolved rough idling characteristics on 4.9L and 5.0L engines by replacing the injectors with ones that offer better spray patterns . Your Ford dealer should be equipt with an OASIS computer that amoung other things can help the tech diagnose problems like yours . My 4.9L suffered from a very rough idle . Its partly because todays engines are designed to run so lean and couple that with a poor injector spray pattern and you get a rough idle . Usually a fried EEC will cause other driveability problems not just a rough idle . Id rather see you find for sure what the cause of your rough idle is rather than change parts based on a loose theory . Im not saying for sure the EEC is fine , but before you shell out for a new one make sure it is the problem . The revised injector(s) part number I used is F1ZZ*9F593*B . I think that injector can be used with the 4.9 , 5.0 and 5.8L engines ? Talk with a tech at Ford about this , preferably someone that deals with driveability problems all the time . Finally , Im sure that part number has been revised 10 times but it will show up on the parts guys computer if it has changed .

Bob, I looked at the wiring diagram in the haynes and the PCM pin descriptors are almost the same. Some are for the 5.8 and some for the E4OD. Pin nos. 8, 9, 18, 24, 28 I'm not sure about. I can get the PCM for free but not far another two weeks so I'll trouble shoot a little more.
