Disconnecting Speedometer

How do you disconnect the speedometer and cable on a 2001 Ranger 4x4 supercab?

Does this affect the on-board computer? Need to replace it.

The speedo is electronically operated. If your speedo is not operating or is erratic, it's probably the VSS that has failed. The VSS provides speed info used by the ECM, cruise, A/T if equipped, and the speedo.
