Another thing to realize is that the slippage of the T/C allows the engine to get into the position/range of the torque curve sooner, where the engine is therefore developing more torque. There comes a point where the T/C is in theory locked at a certain engine RPM; this is known as stall speed. Do not confuse this idea with a locking T/C used in modern and even older T/C's. The electronic lock on such converters is just that, full lock and no slippage. This replicates a manual tranny in that there is no slippage, and thus gas mileage goes up.
