Those gimmicks are just that ... gimmicks. Like the man above said, keep the tires inflated (I keep mine at 65 PSI at all 4 corners), and take it easy on the go-pedal. I get about 16 MPG highway, 11.5 MPG highway towing 5,600#. I once saw 17 MPG on the overhead display, but I had been cruising along at a steady 45 MPH for about 10 miles right after a fill-up. Around the city, I get about 11 MPG ... but add in a few miles out in the county, and I'll see 12. I'm happy with these numbers because my old pickup with a 5.8L V8 never got better than 10 MPG. BTW, my MPG numbers are calculated 'cause the o'head display tends to be about 4-tenths optimistic.
I have an 02, V10 with the Helix and K&N air intake. I have noticed no improvements in mileage. The horsepower is where I feel the difference especially from a dead start or hitting the passing gear.
'00 V10 4x4, My wife gets 11 - 12 mpg city driving, we get 15 highway, 14.9 with A/C on. We run 87 octane, higher octane just drains my wallet quicker with no increase in mpg. I do notice it runs better right after a wash and wax.
Here's PA toll road tip, don't use a truck lane going through the toll booth when your loaded up. They have scales and you'll pay a higher class rate because you go over 8000 pounds.
i gota an idea, replace the gasser v10 with a 6.0 PSD. (prolly too expensive mod) Mine averages about 16-17mpg mixed highway and city, and gets close to 19-20mpg if its all highway and I set the cruze at 70mph.
I crunched the numbers on a diesel. I like them but ... when you take into account the higher up-front cost (new or used), and the higher maintenance costs, the diesel's better MPG doesn't provide any actual savings until you hit 175K to 190K niles. Until that time, it's paying for itself ... and that money can buy a lot of gasoline ... even at today's prices. Anyway, I'm long-tired of a truck by the time I've got that many miles on it ... so the added expense of a diesel was not worth it IMHO.
I added some motorsport headers and a performance exhaust on my 4.6 and got improvements of around 15%. I have more performance and better gas mileage and it sounds good too. Its not too loud and very comfortable in the cab. However, you'd have to get rid of a good exhaust system. Check into at least a cat back exhaust. Not to expensive and you should still see some decent mileage improvements.Up here in Canada gas is more expensive and Its helping to pay for itself in gas savings
