Check engine lite

I have a 1990 E350 van with what I believe to be a 351cid engine. It is propane powered. The other day it backfired and then began running rough. I fixed the rough running but now the 'check engine lite' comes on within a few seconds of starting and stays on. According to the manual it should be taken to the dealer but they charge too much. Can anyone give me any idea what to look for to extinguish it?

Have the codes pulled. The computer has detected a sensor out of range. WIth the backfire I'd say the oxygen sensor got toasted. Autozone will pull them for free.
