Ok I am almost done with my phase 1 Big Block project, so I am now looking at starting to learn some about building a 302, bolt on stuff first. I have a 89 model 302 (shhh, its in a station wagon) the only mods are dual exhaust. What are some or the first performance steps that I might do to this motor. It is EFI...
Shorty Headers? Better intake air flow? ECU Chip? This poor thing is detuned something fierce... Jery
well the chip is really doing nothing for a stock motor so pull that off right away. is this motor mass air or speed density. this will determin how far you can go with perticular mods.
Better flowing heads, intake, throttlebody and either 1.7rockers or different cam.
Thanks for the reply. As I said, I am new at 302's... I dont know how to recognize a speed density. And I had a MAF on a different car. It look like it is MAF... Ford airfilter box connected to a short 4" dia flex 90, to the MAF (I think) the throttle linkage is connected to an 4"round throttle plate/air intake butterfly....
Sorry, I did my best to describe it. I searched this forum for clarity on the subject but came up short. You mentioned putting in 1.7 rocker arms. That seem like a pretty easy mod vs. a new cam. I am sure that a cam, matched up to better heads, headers, more fuel etc... is the trick. But this is a daily driver, so the easier the better for me.. thank you...
the 302 is speed density,89-up stangs only had mass air!only advantage the wagon motor has is that it is a roller motor!
Matt, is a "roller" motor, meaning roller cam and rockers??? What are the first
steps to improving a stock efi 302? Are better perorming parts available from different models/yrs of 302's, or is aftermarket the only way to go. For example, I have seen lots of stock shortie headers from mustangs? on ebay for $20, etc... This isnt a race car (lol) so I'm looking for "reasonable' mods..
Thanks man, Jery.
roller cam only in the 86 and up pass. cars!are you going card with it or efi?stock shorties are a lil' better than cast iron manifolds(get more room)what are you going to put it in(truck-car)?if your staying with the wagon you might do a gear swap on the rear end to help out a lil".there is a lot of bolt on stuff out there you can do but not really do able when you draggin' a good 4500lbs of dead weight around! lol
4500 lbs of dead weight? Hah! You should see all the chicks come out after the ******* wagon... its a sight. And the ultimate sleeper! (when you need a nap, just fold down the seats. Hah!) Get it? Sleeper???
I want to stay EFI, and start with the smart/easy fixes, but I dont know which things will benefit this motor the most. (I'm a 460 guy)
Dont know where to start... K+N filter, bigger efi throtlle stuff, headerzzzzz.
thanx dude
barca_texas--- I had a 302( in a 67 Fastback) that someone installed a radical cam, an old Edelbrock F4B intake manifold (2500-7000 rpm), headers, screw-in rocker studs and a 4 bbl. Holley 650 double pumper that had both primary and secondary linkages set up to operate at the same time. Wow..It flew..Couldn't say much for gas milage. That may be a bit much for a wagon, but maybe it'll give you some ideas.
