Ya know that twisting, wanna puke, bad feeling you get in your gut when you say find your truck stolen, or your wife/girlfriend has been seeing other men, or some member of your family has been found dead, you know the "oh #^*$, this is really bad" feeling? I was watching the 11PM news, and I hear "Report of the first successful human cloning". I got the feeling then. Some company that specializes in cloning (I can't remember the name, it was something really obvious like Clonetech or Clonodyne or some such) made a baby that was born today from a 30 year old woman. Supposedly, a third party must do a genetic test to confirm that this baby is a clone, but that's a formality at this point.
Unless this company is just faking this for publicity, we've just turned to a new chapter in our history that frankly scares the heck out of me. The only word that comes to mind is UNHOLY.

I have to wonder if this child will survive. Think of the mental problems it will have- "I'm the only person on this planet who is not an original", etc. But you can get into even deeper religious questions, too- does this person have a soul, can a copy be considered as a person? Plus, would you really want a copy of yourself running around? I wouldn't put another person through my upbringing, only to be a kinda short, heaftily built hairy guy. I maen, come on, you guys have seen my picture, would you want to see two of me running around? Would you want two of yourself running around?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Dec-02 AT 09:42 AM (EST)]and to make it worse, the baby is soposably a clone of the mother. yuck. cloneing is just like people now being able to chooose the sex of their babys. its just wrong. people just need to let god do his work.

If this is true, then the implications can be staggering. Imagine Saddam cloning himself 50 times over. How could one tell who is the real "evil doer". On the other side of the coin, imagine Einstein being exhumed, cloned, educated, and then working where he may have left off. Furthermore, anyone who has the money could have themselves cloned in order to satisfy their ego trip. I can just see it now, more Michael Jacksons, Pee Wee Hermans, the Michael Jordons Basketball team. A real pandora's box, for sure.
But how do you put the genie back into the bottle? Surely if we construct laws to prevent this, then only the lawful will be legal. People with money, and the desire, will do whatever it takes to satisfy their misdirected and egotistical intentions. So I am not sure how this can be regulated, except by the will of nature.
Cloning is another means of reproduction. It produces another individual that is genetically identical to the host. (Kinda gives new meaning to the phrase 'go bleep yourself') However the new individual will have their own set of experiences during their up-bringing. I'm sure there will even be differences in tempermant and personality. They will not be created already knowing everything you know. This is also not a means of immortality for the original individual.
Should we do it? I think not. It opens a huge pandora's box of problems.
1. Does the clone have their own right or are they the 'property' of the original host? Hey it's my dna in that clone so the clone belongs to me.
2. Creating clones for the sole purpose of harvesting organs that will match the host.
3. Can we create a group of clones to be slaves or to do distasteful/dangerous work. How about I clone myself, send the clone to work and bring home the money and I go fishing for the rest of my life?
Is there any legitimate reason or need to do this. There are so many ways for infertile couples to reproduce or adopt that I see no need for this. Or maybe it's a radical feminist plot to make men irrelevant in the reproduction process. :+
Frankly, I don't believe the claim for a minute. The people making this claim belong to a wacky cult called the Raelian Movement. They believe that life on Earth began when aliens visited 25,000 years ago in flying saucers. The company you referred to is called "Clonaid." It is a creation of the International Raelian Movement and is controlled and staffed entirely by Raelian cultists.
The International Raelian Movement claims to have about 55,000 members around the world right now. They are primarily in France and in francophone Canada (Quebec, especially Montreal), though apparently those cult-prone Japanese are falling victim at a fairly rapid rate, also. Friends of mine who have come into contact with Raelians in Montreal state that they are basically non-threatening -- if a bit loopy -- and generally regarded "like a family's dotty aunt", at least, they would be so regarded "if your dotty aunt was a silicone-enhanced stripper who wore a six-pointed star medallion, espoused free-love orgies, and spent their weekend's hocking the self-published cosmology tracts of a former French race car driver."
The Raelian Movement was founded in 1973 by a Frenchman who until that time was a writer for a French magazine about auto racing. He announced that he had been visited in a Volcano by these aliens, called "Elohim", who had explained the truth to him and directed him to spread the word. They supposedly gave him the name "Rael", from which his religious cult took its name.
The Raelians been around for almost three decades now and have regularly demonstrated their sole talent -- grabbing headlines by taking whatever is topical and hitching their wagon to it. Abortion and sex-ed in the eighties? Raelians handed out condoms to school kids. Gay rights in the early 90s? Raelians staged free love-ins. Catholic sex abuse scandals in the last year? Raelians picketed Catholic high schools, urging students to sign apostasy pledges.
So have the Raelians and their company, Cloanid, managed to clone a baby? Well, they had set up a secret lab in West Virginia two years ago and seemed close to success until the baby's "father", a poor fellow who wanted to clone his dead son, got too chatty and US officials shut it down. Last year, the Raelians announced that 50 Rael women were ready to bear the first clones.
Regardless of whether they have really managed to clone a human being, they've been the top story on CNN for the 24 hours. I think that's what they were after all along.

A clone would be a human individual. Just like identical twins, they have separate souls. Bible teaches body + breath = soul.
Imagine the day when the child can sue the parents for not having "made" them without defects. In nature, only the fittest get to reproduce, currently, this is not the case with humans. Cloning could take us to this end.
A clone should be no one's property, they are people, like anyone else. I'm sure we can clone an individual organ if we can a whole human.
I'm sure we all have flaws that we wish we weren't born with. If I could clone my pets, I would do it. Why take the chance with some other dna combo when I like this one. I like the color, smell, personality and idiosyncrasies of the ones I have. We've been doing similar things for years. Breeding select animals together in hopes for as good as parents, then issuing papers. Cloning refines the process is all.
In an age where we pick our pets to match our carpet and haul one of God's creatures off to be surgically altered to be "furniture friendly", wouldn't it be easier on us and the animal to engineer one and then clone it?
We just need to regulate it, because, obviously we can't stop it. If we just stick our head in the sand and pretend it isn't happening, who knows what atrocities will be happening.
If they did clone someone the poor kid {clone} would most likley grow up in the lab. Just like a rat having all kinds of tests run on it all the time. I think its a bad idea to clone amything {well a clone of my truck wouldnt hurt lol}.
