No temperature control!

Help! I have a 98 Ranger 3.0 L 4x2 manual. I was driving home from work yesterday and heard a rather loud clunk. This morning coming home, I had no heat or cooling. No matter where I turned the temperature ****, the temperature stayed the same. AC and fan both run fine. But cannot control temperature. Done several searches here and had no luck. Also, temperature gauge was normal. Any ideas? Thanks

Try a search for "blend door" problems. That would be my innitial guess.

I agree, sounds like a blend door issue. If so, you can either replace it by pulling the dash and replacing the plenum (lots of time):

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=152937

or you can try the "workaround" that many people have found to be worthwhile (Ranger and Explorers are similar in this regard):

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...threadid=24962

P.S. Welcome to FTE!

I read the blend door posts and that does not seem to be the same problem. The blend door (from what I read) causes all heat or all a/c. This is neither. Its just straight air when panel/floor is selected. No temperature change is made to the air. Nor does the temperature change on defrost or a/c. Thanks

The blend door could be set for 50/50 mix of cold and hot so there would not be all cooling or all hot. It is easy to see the acutator move when you change the temp control. I would start there first and then look at the heater and AC lines to see if they are hot/cold.

Do you get AC in max AC, if it's the door is stuck 50/50 you should since the coolant is not flowing to the heater core.

correct, in Max AC blend door position is irrelevant, you will get cold air if your AC is otherwise working. Feel the accumulator while max ac is running, it should be cold. If you are not getting heat in any setting, either hot coolant is not reaching the core due to failed heater water diverter valve (try feeling the lines that lead to the core while heat is on), or the blend door is stuck shut, in which case you should get cooling, if AC is working. MAybe you have 2 problems?

Well, to be honest. I'm not getting any change with heat or AC. Doesn't get warmer or colder. I tried the Max AC this morning but it was already chilly outside so can't tell. I'll try again this afternoon and check the heater core lines too. Does anyone know where I can get a schematic of the flowpath? Does this sound like two problems that have emerged simulataneously? I have used both AC and heat in the last two weeks. Also, where is the actuator I can see work Dave? Is that in the glove box with the blend door?

On the 98 the actuator is located on the top on the air handler under the dash. Set it to hot and look at the position and then cold and see if it has moved. It can still be the broken shaft on the blend door if it moves. Also under the hood is the valve on the for the heater hose, it also has a vacume actuator and should move when set to max and other positions on the AC/Heat switch. As for the Air flow the only place I know too find it is the ford shop manual.

The air comes in from the blower, through the evaporator, then through the heater core if the blend door allows it, then to the rest of the plenum and the ducts.

Sure, I bought a new actuator before I realized the problem was the blend door itself. If we had to remove the dash, the famous blend door fix wouldnt be worth doing, its only because ths dash dosenst have to be removed that it is worthwhile. Just open the glovebox, pinch the sides and drop it down out of the way.

I guess yours still works.. must be nice.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

FWIW, I had to replace the BDA in my '94 SHO (and also do a little blend door repair, too) which does require pulling the dash. There are no shortcuts or workarounds available on the Taurus. It took me about 10 hours total, being my first time through. Wouldn't want to do it again.

If you're interested, you can read about it here:

Well, I've monkeyed with this thing for the last couple of weeks and still haven't got this working. I rode around this summer without heat but now its gotten too chilly to ignore. I tried the blend door fix and have had no success. But, somehow I have started getting heat. If I set the fan speed to high and cycle the vent/floor/defroster/ac switch from max to floor several times, eventually something will clunk and I will get all of the heat that I want. Then I can change fan speed to whatever. I had been riding around like this (full heat) and cracking the windows, but the other morning I had no heat. I cycled it several times and finally something clunked and I had heat again. What am I missing here??? Please help
