Does anyone else have a bumper like this? I thought this was pretty common until I started looking at the galleries. Do you think this was stock or aftermarket? It is obviously made for this truck because of the way it fits the fenders.
I've been around Ford Pickups for 50 years and have never seen a bumper like that.Got to be aftermarket.

I haven't seen one like that either. I certainly would not want one like that on my truck. One bump in the rear and your rear fenders get crumpled too.

I doubt it is OEM, since it has a missing bolt that doesn't look like it lines up with anything. Designed to prevent hooking the bumper on something? It wasn't uncommon in the day to hook something (like the guy in the parking space behind or in front of you's bumper or your cow's leg) with the bumpers so far away from the body and hanging out there like a hook. Maybe Ron Popiel's first product?
I know what you all mean about damaging the fenders due to a bumper hit, but it seems to have been a very common thing to do, including the slanted brace to the top of the bed. Mine was done in 1/4" steel, clearly made by a local shop, but I've seen factory made pieces the same. I've never been clear if they were to compensate for the fenders rotting off at the rear top, or to protect the fender.
With regards to the rear bumper on your truck. Personaly I think you have the wrong one, not a match to anything I have seen on a 48-50, which you have.
I do however believe that this could have been a stock or accessory bumper for a Platform Stake Bodied Truck. As the holes match up for the rear fender brace, and possibly the bolt hole on the curved part was also used as a reinforcment brace.
Looking at the pic, I also believe this to be from either the late 30s, or into the 40s, up to possibly 47.
These Platform Stake Bodied Trucks, shared the same wheel base as the 1/2 to pickups, as you could get on of these in a 1/2 ton.
As the Platform was higher and more open this could account for the full wrap around. One other factor is that I don't believe chrome was used in 48 on up. It was how ever used in 47 down.
Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in, and maybe there is another answer out there.
Well sure can't argue with the photo. I have never seen one of these, just goes to show you learn every day.
Thanks for the reply and I will pass that on if I ever see one.
I was sure that I had an idea going there with the Platform Stake Body, but was wrong.
Sure would make a mess out of those fenders, in a rear end collision. Thanks again for the correction.
Thanks for all the replies. What a great picture and a great bit of information. I'll definately put this in my folder of information for the truck. I"m willing to take the chance with the back fenders. I like the look of the bumper and love the fact that it is period correct. Thanks for the info.
