My 94 F150, 302, E40D Trans, 4x4 has a habit of downshifting too often from 4th to 3rd on slight inclines on the highway. I found a Ford technical service bulletin (94-21-16) which is supposed to correct this problem. The fix is to install a new powertrain control module (pcm). Has anyone performed (or had this done) to their truck? Did it do the trick? I want to fix this problem before it kills the transmission, but I don't want to spend big bucks unless I know it will fix the problem.
After this long how do you get this taken care of? Do you just buy the part yourself? And how do you know that the replacement part isn't the same as the one you took off. I would like to fix this also and not have everyone reply with turn the OD off.
The TSB says to verify there are no diagnostic test codes. If there are none, replace your existing PCM with the appropriate one from the table listing displayed in the TSB. I think the PCM is supposed to be under the dash on the drivers side. The PCM should be labeled with a part number similar to "F4TF-12A650-AAA". If you take your part number and the TSB number (94-21-16) they should be able to find the correct new part. I am reluctant to provide the part numbers from my copy of the TSB, because I have no idea if it is the latest and is still accurate. I would hate to give someone bad information which could cause them to waste money. That is what the dealership parts department is for. There was a previous message listed here a few days ago which explains where the PCM is and how to remove it. I recommend anyone performing this procedure properly ground themselves (electrically) so as not to damage the PCM with static electricity. I have no idea if this will fix your or my problem. I was hoping someone has already done this and could tell me if it fixes the problem.
I just found out that my transmission is really a 4R70W, not a E40D. So I don't think the TSB will work for me. If your ID plate says E for the transmission, it is E40D. If it says U, it is the 4R70W. I am considering installing a Baumann shift kit - they claim it should cure my problem.
