Question 83 F150, 400

just finished the swap, and test driving it around with open manifolds....neighbors aren't too happy.... I am sending it to a garage within the next couple of weeks to get an exhaust put on, and im not sure what is best yet...

i have stock manifolds right now, debating on the gain by getting headers, and wouldnt know what set up would be best. I am going to run dual 3" from the manifolds back, but I have to put high flow cats on....

im not sure what muffler i want to go with, if anyone has a suggestion, all i know is that i dont want flowmaster, I am thinking about a dynomax, Borla, or gibson....

Headers are always worth it. Shorties are good replacements from stock, long tubes are good for a little more torque over shorties.

Any of the mufflers you mentioned are good.

Is the 400 stock?

I wouldn't be running dual 3" on a 400, dual 2.5" max. And yeah, any muffler other then Flows.

400 is a stock jasper motor, with about 20k on it...

thanks for the input, if u think 3" would be too much, dont u think the cat and muffler would give it enough back pressure?

and how much of a pain in the knuckles would it be to put long tubes in, over shorties, do u think? theres no exhaust on it now except for the manifolds...i just know ppl who say long tubes are great, but set a day to the side to put them on...

Shorties should bolt up to the exhaust where the manifolds did with no mods required. Long tubes will of course need some of the exhaust shortened to fit, since they will reach down further than shorties. Not that big of a deal.

Backpressure isnt the problem, the less you have the better. Velocity will probably be affected. Thats why I asked if the motor was stock. A stock 400 will probably be a little happier with smaller pipe. Not to say it wouldnt run great with 3" pipe.

Generally, you are looking for a few ft/lbs of low end torque to move up into the midrange, due to the exhaust gasses being able to make use of the larger pipe and have better velocity at higher RPMs. If you are driving it on the highway a lot, that might be useful for better passing power. Either way, the low end difference is usually not noticeable except on a dyno. Sound will also be deeper with the larger pipe.

All said and done, go with whatever you want.
