i have a 96 f-150 with a 302. i am putting flowmaster super 40's on it and they will exit on each side in front of the rear wheels by running the exhaust between the frame and the rocker panel. from the manifold to the muffler will be 2.5" and from the muffler will be 3". how far should the muffler be from the manifold or how far from the tailpipe end. it will be true duals with no cats and an h-pipe (maybe an h-pipe) they will exit at 90 degrees in front of the tires
I have the feeling that there won't be any way for an X or H pipe if you run the pipes out from the manifolds, the pipe should come down from the engine and turn out under the frame right around where the radius arm bushings mount to the frame. If I remember right it kind of raises up around there and makes a nice spot to tuck pipes into.
can the mufflers be too close to the manifolds? also i am going to put the
h-pipe right where the stock drivers side pipe shoots across to the passenger side under the oil pan.
The further away a restriction is from the engine, the less impact it has on performance. If you could, you'd want cat's all the way back away from the engine, but unfortunately they have to act on exhaust coming right out of the engine to be at temperature. I'd do an H-pipe if you want a crossover right after the exhaust pipes join together on the right side, then run back a bit and do the muffler. Just me though. Get that muffler under the bed to reduce resonation a bit.
Saurian,
I have the exhaust pipes both running down the right side now, with the mufflers under the bed and i want to change it so one runs out infront of each wheel..i will put the mufflers back farther..thanks for the advice
i like the resonance, i have 40 series on it now and they resonate pretty good, especially since i took the tailpipes off yesterday. Maybe im wierd, but i think that exhaust should be just as loud inside the truck as it is outside
I might be crazy here but I think I remember 97 fords had their exhaust leading out in front of the rear tires. It wasn't long after that a recall was done and exhausts were to exit via the back of the truck. Not sure why but worth looking in2.
i think the exhaust coming out in front of the wheel messed up the wheel and tire. My truck never goes more than a week without a carwash so i dont think that it will be a problem, also, i work right around the corner, and dont drive to school, so i might drive 20 miles a week
