A different math problem..

Three guys check into their hotel room. The clerk charged them $25 for the room. Each guy put up a $10 bill for the room. The clerk could not figure out how to evenly divide the $5 change between the three guys. He gave the $5 change to the bell boy and told him to give the guys their change. Well the bellboy couldn't figure how to divide it either, so he kept a $2 tip for himself and gave each guy a $1 bill for change.
Now, each guy put out $10 and then got $1 back. Each guy is out $9. Three guys out $9 each equals $27. The bellboy has $2 in his pocket. $27 plus $2 equals $29, so where's the other dollar???

Oh, boy, here we go again....

The hotel clerk got $25.
The bellboy got $2.
The patrons each got $1 back = $3

Total = $30

You're counting the $2 the bellboy got twice and leaving out the $3 the patrons were refunded.

Or, if the patrons each got a dollar back, then they paid a total of $27(=$25 to the clerk + $2 to the bellboy).

It's just a word game.

*skritchezz haid*

25 for the room, three bucks back is 28.

Two bucks fer the bellhop - that's thirty...

Seems pretty straight to me. I hope you don't plan on going into accounting!!!

I personally like this homework problem I had the other day:

You have a DC motor driving a gear train which is attached to a conveyer belt, with a spring/damper system attached to the belt, which is connected to a mass which moves only parellel relative to the belt. Derive the equations of motion for said system.

Variables and constants:
Spring:
Stiffness (k, N/m)
Damping (b, N.s./m)
Mass (m, N.s^2/m)
Mass displacement (t), m)
Support displacement (y(t), m)
Reaction force at base ( F(t), N)

Armature resistance (R-sub-a, Volts/Amps)
Armature inductance (L-sub-a, Volts.sec/Amps)
Moment of inertia of the motor (J-sub-m, N.m.s^2)
Viscous coefficient of motor (b-sub-m, N.m.s)
External voltage applied to DC motor ( e(t), Volts)
Armature current ( i-sub-a(t), Amps)
Back-emf (e-sub-b(t), Volts)
Angular displacement of motor shaft (Theta-one (t) , radians)
Torque developed by the motor (T-sub-one (t), N.m)

Radii of gears 1 and 2 (r1 and r2, m)
Number of teeth on gears 1 and 2 (n1 and n2)
Moments of inertia of the gears (J1 & J2, N.m.s^2)
Radius of drive wheel (a, m)
Moment of inertia of drive wheel (J-sub-w, N.m.s^2)
Viscous coefficient of drive wheel (b-sub-w, N.m.s)
Mass of drive chain (m-sub-c, N.s^2/m)
Angular displacement of gear 1 (Theta-one (t), radians)
Angular displacement of gear 2 (Theta-two (t), radians)
Torque developed by the drive wheel (T-sub-2 (t) N.m)

Here's an easier one:

You have 13 blue socks and 5 black socks in a drawer, It's dark and your lights burned out so you're just going to grab enough to make a pair and go. How many socks do you need to pull out to ensure that you have a matching pair.

Simple. 3. If you only grab two, they may or may not match. Grab a third, and it's guaranteed to match either the first or the second.

My puzzle is actually a play on words. When you tell it to someone they will begin to catch on, and as they do keep repeating the part about three guys times $9 is $27, plus $2 equals $29. I have had some very educated people not get that one, but it's all in the presentation.

Dang! I came up with the cube root of negative purple. Gotta go check my calculations...

Oh, there it is. I made an assumption about three chickens. Should have been one billy goat.

Now where was that crib sheet...

Cheers,

First of all, what type of hotel only charges $25, and second, for $25 a room, what are all 3 guys doing sharing a room.

If a Canadian train capable of 160MPH going 59 miles has been traveling for 5 minutes and just crossed the border, hits an American train that was traveling for 35 minutes and is capable of 80MPH that was going 30 miles, how far apart were the stations they left from? And where would you bury the Canadian survivors?

first, you don't bury survivors, and the american train would have done stopped by now if it was travelling at 80mph bc it would have covered 40 miles in 30 minutes, and since it was only going 30 miles, then the canadian train did something wrong if it hit a stopped train.
