IMO there is nothing wrong with the 6.0...the problem was with the computers.
Mechanically the motor is sound, the electronics are getting much better and that was the center for concern...
All new production engines will have issues, they are learning, the number of issues are decreasing, and yes it had some
You can tell a 6.0 from a 7.3 by the powerstroke badge on the door. The 6.0's have a nice chrome badge that says pwerstroke and the letters are red. The 7.3's (2001-2003) say pwerstroke in chrome and the background is black and the adge is narrower. In 99-00 the badge was on the front of the fender and it was small and said powerstroke v-8. All the 6.0's have the red letters.
I have to agree with tim the engine is sound, but I believe ford is running the rpms a bit to high, and the engine is being pushed to its limits. That is why you see so many trucks that have mods having so much engine trouble. AND that is why there is no replacement for displacementthe 7.3 could take the m ods and keep on rolling the 6.0 is maxed from the factory my opinion. TIME will tell as the trucks that have mods get high miles if they stay together. but you have to admit they must have some reason for going to new engine so soon.
I suspect (cannot state as fact - so take this for what it's worth) that the 6.0 was intended to be an emmissions band-aid to get Ford through to the 2007 model year. The 7.3 apparently could not be made to meet lower emmissions requirements and the introduction of the 6.0 replacement would appear to coincide with "mandatory" low sulfur diesel in June 2006. I really don't think it's a reliability issue as our Chevy friend would like to believe. I've had no problems with my engine and none of the dozens of folks I've spoken with before and after my purchase have had any problems either.
BTW D-Max, you are to be complimented on your charity work. I took a moment to visit the website you have linked in your signature. Looks like a fine organization.

Wilderness Ford, is the current F-250 you own a used vehicle? What kind of treatment/care had (or hadn't) the previous owner given it? Is the reason that it is in the shop possibly related to those issues? More info please.
Many of us around here (myself included) have purchased our 6.0 right off the lot and have had absolutely no problems. I have over 12,500 mi. on my F-350 and have had a great experience. Hope you get yours up and running strong. Take care.

I'm waiting until the '08 model year to decide on a new vehicle. Hopefully both Ford and GM will have updated motors and chasis. I'm actaully hoping to have a difficult decesion. But to this point the GM s a good truck.
On a side note I was riding around in my friends 2002 SD all weekend scouting for turkeys. He had a 7.3 litre in it - forgot how nice a truck it was ...
From the inside, at speed it was as quite as my dmax is and he had the air pressure in the tires just perfect so it road very nice.
I am a ford truck man and have had 2 previous super duty trucks not a problem and the 6.0 is a hanger queen, and it was bought new,as many that have problems were. they just didnt test the 6.0 enough and put it out there. AND they didnt train there techs either . and I cant tell you how many people I know who have had trouble or having trouble,I know a lawncare company in my town who bought 4 new f350 with 6.0 and they had nothing but trouble, ford bought them all back. so there is a reliablity problem. But I think the biggest problem is no trained techs in our area.

Unfortunately you are correct tn. We are very lucky in the DFW area as we have multiple dealerships with certified diesel techs trained on the 6.0. Those that have problems seem to get them fixed very quickly.
Plus...maybe the local minimum 48 cetane mandate has more to do with many issues than we think. Along with me adding 6+ cetane at every fuel up. My truck has been vedy, vedy...good to me.

This is a great site to find answers and recommendations, I love it. But then there are those guys from the back country that come here and blast everything. I would call them phantom Ford posters. Wilderness Ford, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. If in fact you do own a Ford. Sell it, sue the dealer, use the lemon law and go buy a Chevy or a Dodge and hang out with those guys.
I have an 04 PSD with 18,450 trouble free miles. My first Ford was a 02, V-10 Dually with zero problems, I traded for the Diesel and it is awesome. But who am I to talk. I should just get all my buddies together, drink some beer, and tear out that piece of (you know what) motor in stick in a Chevy 8.1 or 454 Rat.
In all seriousness, can you back up and state some facts on Ford street rods that have Chevy motors? Don't tell me you have a friend of a friend, but show us some pictures or links to a web site. I came from the Muscle car era and used to have a Dodge Coronet 440 Magnum, 727 torque flight tranny, dana 60 rear. My older brother had a Charger 440 Magnum and countless friends had Mustangs and Chevy's. I'm from So Cal and in the good old days used to race everyone. So I know muscle cars.
Fact is, Chevy has more cars in NASCAR right now, but Ford has been winning most of the races lately, look at the past races. And 03 and 04 Championships. So mathematically, Chevy should always win more races, in which sometimes they do. Ford dominated Le Mans can anybody remember when Ford entered the GT40 and they one 1st, 2nd & 3rd. and the following three years won 1st every time. Right now Chevy is dominant in Formula one, but this has only been in the last five years. Ford dominated Formula One for more than 30 years. Anyone remember Ford/Lola, Ford/Cosworth?
Right now, John Force the 11 time champ and Tony Pedregon ran Mustangs in NHRA. Tony now has his own team and runs Chevy. Though funny cars are not common cars/engines that we can buy, Ford is the dominate car that is backed by Ford Racing in the NHRA. Don't believe me though, do your research and look on the web. I have to admit though, ford is not into drag racing factory stock cars (I'm told they don't have a factory car that qualifies). Do everyone a favor and get rid of that Ford!

First of all, stop screaming and turn off those caps! We didn't sell you that lemon. This is a great site and if you ask and wait patiently, some one will give you good advise. Since you know that everyone puts Chevy motors into most Ford street rods, I'll wait for those pictures or links to a web site okay? Let me know when you got them.
Just an FYI, Ford 427's where really Chevy engines and the very, very limited Boss 429 Hemi (yes Hemi) was a Mopar engine............
