Now that the weather's warmed up and I've been running with the windows down, I am more aware of the creeking and groaning coming from the suspension. It's most noticeable at slow speeds and seems to be coming more from the front right corner.
The creeking reminds me of the noise an old wooden rocking chair makes.
I have a 2000 Trail Head so it has torsion bars. Is there any lube points that might have been missed? It's not bad but it's a little annoying.
Have I seen discussions on this subject before in this forum
Check your ball joints. My 98 2WD Ranger made a similar sound at slow speeds that ended up being three bad ball joints. Replacement ball joints should have grease fittings (mine did) It cured the problem for me.
Also, check your control arm inner pivots. I had one go out on my '99 (lower left control arm) that started with a mild squeak but got much worse over a period of a couple of months. I pinned it down to the control arm pivot by spraying a little WD40 on it - no squeaks for a day or two. Had to replace the control arm (which fortunately comes with a new ball joint) to fix it.
My 2002 XLT does the same thing, the creeking sounds usually noticed when going over a speed bump or in a driveway. I found the way to fix it. I grabbed my can of really gooey chain lube for my dirt bike (silkolene brand) and i spray all the control arm busings and the leaf spring bushings and pads. It usually last for about 3-6 months before i have to spray it again. I had also tried the wd-40 and it lasted a couple days. The chain lube is a lot thicker and gooeyer and therefore sticks to the parts a lot longer.
I had the same problem in my 1997 4 cyl. Ranger. Turned out to be the ball joints. Had all four replaced, the final bill was around $600.00 at the dealer.
