I need to repair or replace my transmission in my 57, it has a stock 3 speed manual on the column I belive it's a T86. The case is worn and internal gears etc are worn or broke. I have a stock 272 setup any help on finding or replacing with different setup or fixing what I have.
I don't see that tag. Look on the case itself for casting numbers and letters. I suspect it to be a Ford 3 speed, but want to confirm. These casting s are moulded right into the case on either side.
Mike, the standard ford 3 speed will work up as long as it came from a y block motor. I have an FE block motor that required an adapter plate to bolt the original ford 3 speed to it. I beleive it is the same for other non y block engines as well. You may want to check John Mummerts site for trans adapters for newer trannys. You can always fins an original either in the classifieds here or on ebay. with folks going "darkside" they are fairly plentiful
"Darksiders" are the custom and street rod folks. The bane of the resto guys. It's all just some friendly ribbing, but kinda fun.
Yeah, it really bothers me how people like Boyd Coddington can take a complete orginal and destroy it's heat and sole. I can understand a rusted body with no driveline or interior. But destroying a complete running orginal really hurts, yes it is the dark side.

I have a 3sp/od trans with a case that has that the sequence AF-7006- cast into it. It has the large, 10 spline input shaft. In other words, it's a truck transmission. I think that's a fairly common case.
10 spline input shaft
The front bearing retainer diameter is 4 13/16”
The main case casting number is C5AR 7006-
The date code appears to be 6 M 16
The identification tag reads RAN G 1 K024280
Tail housing casting number RF-C5TR-7A040-BBI
