Just got my F 250 back from the snap ring recall and when I got home I had a tranny leak on the front of the bell housing. thinking it was just a spill, I wiped it off. Ran the motor in idle for 10 min and no leak. Took it out for a drive and the leak was back. I guess the tech didn't do such a good job on the front seal. Back to the dealer on Monday to give them a piece of my mind. So far I've owned this truck for 2 weeks and the dealer has had it for 1 of them. they better get it right this time.
My 05 went in for a rebuild of the trans (metal in the remote filter) and was wet on the bottom of the bell housing when I got it back.. No big deal.. I pulled the inspection plug, washed it down (twice within a few hundred miles) with spray parts wash, and blew it dry.. Bone dry.. Wet again.. Took it back for the first free oil change, and wanted them to fix the leak.. By the way, its still clunking between 2-3 upshift.. They cleaned it up again and added dye.. Never even weeped again Could be that when the pump was installed, they were a little sloppy on the detail/clean up work.. Mine seemed to leak more than just residue from assembly, but is dry now..
I'm hoping it's the same thing. I'm gonna drive it all weekend and see what happens. If it's still leaking on Monday, they're gonna have to figure it out. I had a nightmare with my 04 F 150, and can't go through that again.

I would tend to agree with this being the possibility. When I perform this recall, despite draining the torque converter as best I can, I always seem to spill fluid while installing the converter not to mention that it leaks out of the pump while there is no converter in the transmission while still on the bench. I guess it all comes down to the technician performing the repair as I make the effort to clean off this fluid and dry it with compressed air. When I am done there is no fluid anywhere, that way I can tell if I have a leak after my road test!
If it's not dripping and you wipe it off a couple times and it goes away I would still contact the dealer and let them know that the quality of their work is lacking by failing to double check the job and clean the unit! It's part of the job.

I've built more than my share of Autos/Manuals ect., T cases, diffs, steering boxes, and 'one' of the most important steps is the 'final' clean up, JUST SO that the customer/operator does bring it back with the complaint of another or same problem, wasting 'valuable' shop time.. And as you stated, catching a potential problem BEFORE it even leaves.. It DOES happen.. Think of the total cost to Ford for tech time/loaner cars cutting this small corner.. And understandably, the techs are being pushed for time for job completion.. It would be way quicker for a quick 'detail', than a repeat appointment.. Some folks maybe don't care as long as there are no drivability issues, but there are those that would have an concern/issue like this, with no problems, and back it goes.. Both my 03, and the 05 have come back from various different dealers with lubes 'streaming' from the Hydro boost replacement (ate the undercoating off the frame, and the return spring hooked through my harness!!), Rear mains replaced (trans lines dumped all over the cross member/pan, and harness hanging down), and after my rear end rebuild on the 05, 'puddles' of gear lube in the rims 'slinging' off onto the paint, as well as the case soaked/dripping with lube, and the trans drip.. I know all dealers and techs don't do this type of work, but sure is frustrating to have it done to you.. And, especially after being VERY clear about how I want it returned... Thanks for doing a good job FD!! The hard part, is to have to be honest when they 'either' call, or mail you a Quality Survey..
I'm starting to think it's the seal. I've wiped it a couple of times and it still leaks. It wont leak if I dont run the vehicle. Once I take it for a drive, I have the leak again. It can sit in my driveway for hours without spilling a drop.
Taking it back tomorrow morning. Already left the service rep a nice message on his voice mail. Even though it's not his fault, maybe he can get a message through to the techs about properly road testing a vehicle before they return it to a customer.
Got a call from the service guys today. They found a loose hose with a slight leak and also think it might be some kind of grease they used on the torque converter.(I doubt it) Just to be sure, they added dye and are going to drive it around. If it only leaks when I drive it, it sounds more like the front seal or the pump seal. I told them not to call me until it's running dry.
Sorry to hear about all that..hopefully it's something simple..my 05 had 900 miles when i carried it in for the dreaded snap ring recall..i was worried about it leaking to..i told the tech several times to take his time and do it right and that i was'nt in a rush..they kept the truck 2 weeks..waiting on parts..i did get a block heater cord w/installation and a voucher for my first oil change free so i did'nt complain too much.I've had it back for 2 weeks and 300 miles.no signs of leakage in driveway..and crawled under it yesterday..bone dry, even ran a paper towel around were i could'nt see..dry..(knock on wood)
Good luck
Louis
