I have a '72 Honda CB450 and the mufflers are starting to rot out on the outside. I was wondering if anyone knew of a nice sounding, loud muffler I could put on in place of the stock ones. Maybe even just straight pipes coming off the headers with a turn out. I don't know where to look for parts for this old of a bike. Thanks
http://www.bikebandit.com is a good place to look. Alos Jcwhitney has bike stuff. http://www.denniskirk.com may have some stuff for the older bikes also. I have a Mac 4 into 1 header with a competition baffle on my old Suzuki GS750 and it sounds great.
WOW! You have a 72 CB 450? Man....I had a friend that had one back then....man it was fast!
I had a Honda 350 four...remember them? I put a set of Hooker headers on it when the mufflers rusted through. That was a common problem on the early 4 cyls. with the up-swept mufflers. Is Hooker still in business?
Basically, as long as the header is OK, you can put a "slip on" on the end.
For tunability (if you are a serious MC gearhead) I like the supertrapp mufflers for sound and ease of adding/removing disks. If you just want it to run quiet, you can always get a oem style.
I wonder if you might just want functional mufflers, I'm not so sure that bike can sing. If you are going to keep it and take care of it, your best bet is keep it stock and keep her quiet. I tried making a 76 KZ400 exhaust louder and it just made the ride that much harder, listening to a loud exhaust screaming at 5000 RPM's isn't much fun.
Hmm, since I know nothing about jetting carbs, I guess I'll just leave the stock mufflers on. They sound pretty nice anyways when you get on it. Has a low rumble to it, pretty unique sound. Thanks guys!
