I've been decoding the ratings plate on a friends 66 F250. When it comes to the engine portion (4th digit of the vin), there is a "Y". Using a book form Cars & parts magazine, Catalog of Ford Truck ID Numbers 1946-1972, it states that the "Y" code means that it was a 352 c.i. "six" cylinder. I've never heard of a 352 6 cyl. Can anyone confirm or deny the existence of this engine. I think that they have a misprint, and they really mean a 352 8 cyl. I did a search on this forum, but every reference to "352" relates to the FE.
Perhaps the code is for a heavy truck with a big six. I believe there is a 370FE big truck engine and there are some other oddball sounding heavy truck engines. A 352 six might me one of those oddball things.
Are you sure the code is for the correct chassis? I've seen the same engine codes used for different engines in different chassis'. A F150 and a F600 might have the same engine code, but different engines due to the chassis they are built on.
The 370 truck engine isn't an FE, it's a 385 like the 429 and 460.
I seriously doubt there was a 352 six cylinder. For one, I don't think they would have two engines with the same displacement. Two, there was no way to easily get that kind of displacement out of an existing engine, which is what they usually did for their oddball truck engines.
Thanks for the replies. The vin is F25YK807097, WB 129, Color J, Model 250, Body F81, Tans A, Axle 24. It's that "Y" code in the vin that has me puzzled.
According to that same book I referenced earlier, the 5th digit is the assenbly plant.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd digits identlfy the series
The 4th digit identlfies the engine
The 5th digit identifies the assembly plant
The last 6 digits identify the consecutive unit number.
