I've got a really ugly, apparently homemade lever.

The lever is part of the top of the tranny.. I have a T98 in mine and had to heat it up so it wouldnt be a knunkle busted anymore.. I do believe a T19 might also fit

Southern California, Merc. I dont know too much about the mechanics of the T98, is it possible to remove just the lever, or is it part of a much larger assembly ?

From What I seen on mine.. its part of the top plate.. it could be removed, But putting it back togather not going to be easy.. I think the bottem levers are welded on from what mine looked like when I rebuilt it...

Well Reamer, I love to find something else that would just bolt in instead of the T98.. 1-2 is non syncro and 99.99999 of the time its a 2nd gear start which make it a 3 speed.. the 98 1st is way to low to use to start with unless your towing one hell of a load.. the Range is 1st 6.40,2nd 3.09,3rd 1.69,4th 1.00... Id love to find something with a 5th or even a 6th overdrive.... Id give this T98 away if I could find something to work...

I think you can adapt a Mustang 5-speed tranny to the y block bell housing.
In fact I'm pretty sure John Mummert sells the reworked bell housing for it.
It's been awhile since I've looked at his website.

If I'm not mistaken, I think the bell housings are the same for 223 & y block.
I'm not 100% sure though, you'd have to check into it.
