10-12° BTDC, the cam does not really make a difference unless it is a big cam. If the engine pings reduce the timing. Follow the directions in a service manual for setting the timing. If the EGR valve has been removed you will need to recalibrate the distributor to stop the pinging without backing off on the timing too far.
