Is the timing unit on a 77 f250 460 retarded? If so, i have heard that changing over to the pre-1972 timing unit will fix this problem. Is this true? And is it possible to simply order a 1970 timing chain and gear unit from an aftermarket parts store and put it on my 1977 460 block? If so does it requir any modification, or is it a direct bolt on swap? Im changing the intake manifold over to an aftermarket aluminum so i figured while its off i might as well change the cam and timing set up while im close to it. Is it a bad idea to put in this cam in a totally stock 77f250 with the 460 never rebuilt-- POWERMAX CRANE 216/228cam--. What kind of problems could i run across swapping the cam out for this new one without rebuilding the entire engine first? thanks
The timing chain and gears form a pre-1972 engine will work to advance your cam timing from 4 degrees retarded to 0 degrees. It is some work but not that big of a deal. There are no other modifications you would need to do to install it. If you are keeping the stock cam then it would need to be rotated slightly in order to align but that’s it.
I can’t answer your question on the specific cam. I’m sure someone else will jump in and do so.
