you are looking for a rear axle from a 1 ton or heavy duty 3/4 ton. the rear hubs will have about 8 bolts on the outside. thats a full floater and thats what you want! the years are from 85 to 96... anything after 96 has the metric bolt pattern and its the 10.5 not the 10.25"
EDIT.... this is what the ends look like but be careful cause the D60FF looks just like the sterling but the rear diff cover on the sterling DOES NOT HAVE A DRAIN PLUG. the plug is on the drivers side just behind the pinion on the side of the centersection
you can find sterlings around here for about $300 thats ready to be bolted up. only thing you might have to do is get new brake shoes!
76fordtruck.... chill out! if he wants to keep the ifs/ttb under his thats his problem for later. yes it is more expensive to lift and can wear tires weird but thats not something you think about when you have a limited budegt. i know i saved up $1000 for my D60 that i bolted straight up. didn't have to 'convert' it or anything. although i did need new brake pads

sorry if i sounded a little harsh.......he can do what he wants, mighy as well if he's got a rig with the ifs....but he was talking about how expensive lockers were compared to a winch. i think if he can afford to lift an ifs, lockers arent to far out of his price range.
Weren't the 10.25 made up to 97 with the standard bolt pattern?.
Cutts got er' right, pretty much any f-250/350 past 85 with a FF rear will be a 10.25", just check the the cover and and make sure theres no plug in it.

lol i could care less but i think he will appreciate you realizing it! and i totally agree with you but to each his own
mustange.... you are right, the 97's still had the sterlings with 8x6.5 pattern, its the 98's that changed!
There were no 98's. They were leftover 97s. Ford wanted to clear the inventory before releasing the Superduties in 99. So anything before 99 is the 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern.
This debate is a lot like the chicken or the egg . . .
A chicken and a egg are lying in bed. The chicken has its head on the pillow smoking a cigarette. The egg rolls over and in a pissed off tone says. "Well I guess we answered that question."
The only way to get 1-ton's for reasonable is to go looking for a for-sale 1-ton sitting around someplace with someone who doesn't know their D60 is worth a grand alone, and buy it from them. Friend of mine GAVE AWAY a heavy 3/4 78 with D60 front and rear. He was going to sell it to me, but I just didn't have the money. He probably would have given it to me, even after it sat for a while. Just had a blown C6 is all...He was gonna narrow the axles and swap them under his Jeep in place of the D35's.
