so for a long time ive been ignoring the update for yahoo messenger, cause my computer kinda sucks and i hate changing anything on it. i finally click "update" and the computer went through the whole deal uploading information, but then when it went to finish it up, MY COMPUTER FROZE UP! so now, it looks like i have the yahoo update, but the program wont open up.
im guessing i have to delete yahoo messenger completly ? and reinstall it ? will i be able to keep my yahoo name or will i have to choose a new one??
I'd try to delete it through the add/remove programs and then reinstall it. You will be able to keep your Yahoo name and account. Once you reinstall it you will even still have the same buddies, etc.
I'll write a note to myseof for when I get home and on my own puter. I have a webaddress where you can download your older version ... or just about any older version of Yahoo Messenger. I had the same thing happen to me with an automatic upgrade. The best thing to do is go into your Yahoo folders and DELETE the "Yupdater" folder. Then you won't have automatic upgrades that can sometimes mess with things. I've been using YM since 98 or 99 and have gone through the whole gamut of Yahoo games. Thats why I now spend most of my time at Paltalk. No games, no booters, no wise-acre children to put up with. The only rule to remember in Paltalk is to NEVER take a PM from someone you do NOT know. That's how the hackers get to you there. Otherwise you are pretty much safe and carefree as compared to Yahick. Check back here later for the web addy for your download page.. I don't think yahick keeps anything but their latest versions... which I found to stink. Heck .. even Paltalk is upgrading to Messenger and supposedly is going to shut off the version I am using .. so rumors are starting there, just like in Yahoo.
yeah, the latest update reminder said that they are going to discontinue use of the yahoo messenger i was using. i just knew something would go wrong by updating it. if i click on the yahoo messenger icon, nothing happens. even if i right click, and click "open" it does nothing for me
The update I did, that messed with my puter, was like downloading a trojan horse. If you have system restore... go back a week and it'll be there in all its old glory. If they are going to somehow turn off all the older versions ... I don't know how they can ... I'm using a version from several years ago and it works better than the current versions and booters don't look for the codes in the older versions, to boot you with...they're too busy cracking the newer versions, which most people get.
You might try a complete delete of all your yahoo folders, including an uninstall from the uninstall menu, then go to www.yahoo.com and download the whole messenger there rather than through the auto updater. For some reason you get better downloads that way and the older version won't interfere with the newer installation. Try that and see what happens. Let me know ... I may have to upgrade soon then. I hope not, because I still use Ytunnel, even though the maker has quit production of it.
i've reinstalled my OS and downloaded new versions of yahoo messenger. yahoo saves your buddy list and password stuff in yahoo. so if you reinstall the messenger just log in and it will pop up your old buddy list
you do have to reset the preferences to not accept pm's from strangers, turn off sounds/pictures and stuff exploited by boot codes.
Go to freecreed.com.....and get an older version of yahoo. That's what I did....to heck with the new version. Once you do that, open up Windows Explorer.....open up the Yahoo folder and delete the 'update' file. Also, be sure and delete all Yahoo folders before you reinstall an older version.
All Yahoo messenger lists are kept on Yahoo servers so you do not lose any of your buddies or your ID.
