I am getting ready to buy my cousins 51 f1 named sanford. it has straight 6 (not original) with a manual 3 speed on the column. i want to put a 5.0 and a t-5 in it. but i also want to keep the column shift just for the cool factor and to keep it looking original. will this work, is there anyone that makes linkage for this, is there any way for this to work.
I think the issue will be the fact that the truck is named Sanford. If I recall, by federal law any trucks named Sanford are only allowed to have old worn out column shifters suitable for a junkyard truck.
It would be really, really tough to get the required motions out of a column shift, given the T-5's single-rail shift system. And if you could, I can't believe it would be as sweet as the T-5's stock shifter.

I'd say your choices are to either go with a floor shift if you must have the T-5 or go with an automatic and keep the column shift. I'm sure the column shift could be made to shift an automatic.
You can keep it looking original with a floor shift. My 52 F3 has a three speed floor shifter. There is an interior shot in my gallery, as well as a picture of Fred Sanford on the running board of his 51.
Im installing a the same combo im my 51 f1, and I dont think a coulmn shifter would work. For one thew t-5 is a top loader tranny, theres no lincage like the older trannys. Be prepared to cut your floor board back about 3" because that tranny is long and the shifter is at the very back, so it will be under the seat.
This link is to s T5 shifter modification that may be of use. Think about mounting this shift mod backwards, thus moving the shifter forward, then extending the handle. www.mustangsplus.com/tech/speedshifter
I'm another fan of shifting a manual on the column and wondered the same thing a year or so ago...
Found out that there are 5 spd column shifting vehicles on some trucks and buses in overseas markets, but not here in North America.
Here is a link to a Mitsubishi set up that way: http://www.motorkingdomplus.com/space.htm
I wonder how difficult it would be to convert one of those mechanisms to an Effie. Sure would be cool....
