the only sign i had was when they went to change filter and fluid about a month ago the fluid was black and the filter was just laying in the pan
How quickly did the fluid turn black ? I mean, how many miles did you get out of the rebuild before you started noticing that the fluid was darker than normal?
unfortunetly im not sure i bought the truck a year and a half ago and everything seemed fine until about a month ago when i decided to get ready for the summer season because we need all the trucks we can get hauling cars for resale the last owner had the tranny replaced three years ago by the ford dealer i bought it from

And you are sure about the mileage? 30 K seems very low.
yeah he didn't drive much he had all the docs on everything the dealer didn't want me to see them but he was really nice when i got his name off the title and called him right now it has 160000 on it i bought it at 149000 and he put the trany in at about 130000 if i remember correctly

Thank you for the heads up, I will make sure the filter is in its place when I have the tranny seviced. I guess I am gonna have to be extra-careful with this transmission. I am gonna change the oil and filter every 15K, just to be on the safe side. Hopefully, that will be enough to keep it working properly for at least 100K miles.
It should depending on what u do i think im gonna convert to a zf 5 speed it seems like ill get better fuel mileage anyway with the 5th gear ratio that it has but good luck with yours

I have been considering a GearVendors Overdrive unit for mileage purposes. Maybe you should take a look. http://www.gearvendors.com/
If you do the service yourself, Make sure and get the filter o-ring seal removed before you install the new filter and use Ford authorized parts for the filter.

Will do, but I am wondering if failing to remove the old o-ring could cause the filter to fall (as previously described) into the pan.
Would the filter falling out of place cause damage to the transmission in the long run?
It would be speculation without seeing the pan drop and the filter in the pan then checking for the o-ring in the hole and seeing if it was extra, but yes the filter being at the bottom of the pan could have caused the trans to suck air past the o-ring causing a drop in oil pressure. Also, having something hit the trans pan can dislodge the filter and cause it to drop also. Keep in mind if the filter was to drop, there isnt much room for it to drop very far as most of the 4R70W pans have dimples in them to hold the filter up.
chasing a thread throughout the forum and I ended up here...hope someone can help.
I have a 99 E250 with a 4R70W out of a 97 Crown Vic installed (dont ask..PO installed it). Anyway, there appears to be a LOT of endplay in the tail shaft - like upwards of 1/8 inch movement. Im assuming the TS bushing is shot. Anyone know if this in an internal replacment or external? If external, any special tool required to remove it or do I have to go internal to get the housing off the shaft? If internal (or messy external), can I just drop the tail shaft and replace the bush without opening a can of worms?
