Quite a bit. Different cases and internals as far as I know. The E4OD bolts to the small and big blocks in the 89-96 F-150 family and the 89-97 F-250 and 350. The 4R70W bolts to the new modular blocks. Someone else can verify this.
E4OD was the previous designation for the 4R100. The AOD-E(W) was the previous designation for the 4R70W. Both have versions that bolt up the mod motors. As time has progressed, so has strength in each.
From the factory, the 4R100 (E4OD) has the advantage... it's the only stock auto bolted to the Power Strokes, it must be rated for some torque. I have seen awesome build ups on the 4R70W, though.
I own a 5.4 powered truck with the 4R70W, and haven't seen or felt a problem in the 8 months I've had it.
I guess it depends on what you're doing with it. A built 4R70W could run some bucks, but if you plan on loading it and getting the full grunt out of an engine you'd probably want to stay with an E4OD.
Thanks. My new truck has the 4R70W. Hopefully it will hold up to the 5.4L just fine. My last truck, 93 F150 4x4, I6 had that awful Mazda 5 speed manual. It was the limiting factor on practically every rating for the truck. It worked flawlessly for 10 years (and is still going strong) but it severly limited the towing capacity of an otherwise strong truck.
Yeah, I know about them.... I was trying to reply without making a link. Sometimes the links are dropped if they don't promote our site here. Also, the people at Baumann prefer the 4R70's as they are Mustang drag people at heart, and I didn't want somebody to think I was bad mouthing the E4OD if I sent them the Baumann link.
For a long while I thought I had an e4OD, because other trucks from my year had it. After looking at that site, I saw that I have a 4r70w. Hmph. Well good to know. They said the e4od has a massive drainpan (20 inches lengthwise), while the 4r70w only has a 15 inch or so drainpan.
Mine has a big old "METRIC" stamped into the bottom of it too... I don't know if e40d's have that too, but it could be an easier way to tell them apart.
