Boy, am I confused??????? LOL..... Does it, or doesn't it work, Only his plumber will know for sure. LOL...... I think I'll be doing the brake lines without it. I bought a double flare tool and am using all hydraulic fittings. Should be OK. Thanks again for the great advice guys.
Personally I have always had better luck with Teflon tape over pipe dope. I set mobile homes for eight years, did alot of plumbing and found I liked tape early on. Coincidently I recently bought a Lincoln Pro-Mig 175 and noticed what appeared to be an internal gas leak in the factory installed gas kit... and of course just as quiclky as I noticed it, I forgot.... and, as expected, I forgot to shut the gas off that night. I awoke to an empty 80 cu ft bottle of sheilding gas. I sucked it up and got my $40 refill, tore the case of, took apart the fittings which were slathered in pipe dope, and reassembled using common teflon tape. I hooked the tank back up, pressurized the line, and shut the valve back off. No drop in three days.
I'm sure pipe dope has it's place in this world, just not in my house.
I've always taken the fitting and started where the threads start, in other words take note where the threads start at the end of the pipe, start here and wrap the tape as if you were threading it onto the pipe ( I guess that would be against the thread?). I just do a couple of wraps, a little goes a long ways.
This might help a little. The important thing is to keep the tape one FULL thread away from the end of the fitting, wrap in the direction shown in the picture, and use no more than 2 wraps of tape if it's the thicker type, or three wraps if it's the thinner type of tape. Note that you need to use narrower tape if you are working on smaller fittings. The tape on the 1/2" pipe fitting is 1/2" wide, and the tape on the 1/8" pipe fitting is 1/4" wide. The 1/4" wide tape is recommended for 1/8", 1/4", and 3/8" pipe fittings. The 1/2" wide tape is used on 1/2" and larger fittings (until you get to really big fittings). Remember, you have to keep at least one thread at the end of the fitting clear of tape or you're asking for trouble.
One other thing - if you are reusing a pipe fitting, make sure you get ALL the old pipe dope or tape off before you do. Use a wire brush or something similar until you see shiny metal all the way around. Left over chunks of pipe dope or strands of tape are definitely an invitation to trouble.
