I have an 86 F250. It has acceleration problems (to put it mildly). If i try to push the gas AT ALL, the engine bogs down and acts as if it is getting none. In neutral, i can rev it up pretty high, but in gear it does the above. Here are some things that I can't decide could be the problem:
-battery terminals are pretty shot, but connected. I would bet they don't
allow full current, though.
-distributor cap was pretty nasty inside; i cleaned it and smoothed the
pins
-as far as i can tell, it has NO FUEL FILTER (truck had a questionable past)
the fuel line goes directly from the tank to the pump to the engine.
It has these symptoms on and off. At one point, it drove completely fine and i could bury the spedometer. then, it was having a slight problem and could only be accelerated slowly (by not pushing the gas more than an inch or so) with a top speed of about fifty...any higher and it would start buckin' like crazy. Now, i can't go more than 10 miles per hour or it freaks out.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM??????
If none of the other troubleshooting works, check and make sure the exhaust system is flowing properly. Not plugged or maybe crushed pipe. I've done a little offroad damage to my pipes and lost power. Just something to think about. Hope it helps.
I would think about all the wires, plugs, distributor cap and so forth and if they fail to solve your problem I would also change/check the control module. It controls spark and timing and could cause your problem as well.
This is a fuel realted problem more than likely, so first pull the fuel line off the bard, have a little gallon pail handy, and have someone turn the motor over so you can see it there's a nice steady flow, if not its either the fuel pump, plugged line or the tank, work your way back starting at the fuel pump (i'm assuming carb), oh there should be a little metal in line filter thingy if its a 2barrel motor right where the metal fuel line goes into the carb, very easy to clog this little filter up, then like i said wrok your way back all the way to the tank.
If this isn't the problem then its probably the carb, but that has been covered.
