Dogs and Bug Lights?

So last night we left the bug zapper on in the backyard. My dog would not go back there if her life depended on it! She is not a cowardly dog at all. Very few things scare her, but the second that light gets turned on she is shaking with her tail between her legs. Even if there are no bugs getting zaped she still knows it is on. The second we turn it off she is out there like nothing happened. Do these things put out some sort of rays or something that bothers dogs? Has this happened with anyone else?

These things use a lot of electricity so they put out a hell of an electromagnetic field. You can sometimes feel it, your arm hairs stand a little bit and the air just feels different around them, almost like an electrical storm. A lot of dogs sense it but since they don't know what it is they typically fear it.

funny, last night I was outside having a beer and i turned mine on, my dog wouldn't come out either, if she did it was for a split second then she would lay down in my bed, she loves being outside. Thought it was funny seeing a post when i was just thinkin about that. I love those things, hours of entertainment.

It could be the ultraviolet light. The magnetic field may be part of the cause. There is a positive and a negative plate, which the current cannot arc between. When a bug gets between them, it is close enough to both to cause the arc, electrocuting the insect.

One other consideration, electromagnetic fields make a noise - maybe you've heard a high pitch "squealing" when an older TV or computer monitor is on, or heard the sound from a transformer. Dogs can hear a much higher pitch than us, so its possible they are hearing the EM field which could hurt their ears. My dogs shy away from these wonderful bug killing devices too!

That is what I thought at first. Only done it once (the mess afterwards was enough for me to learn my lesson) but watching the dog get drunk was funny, especially to a bunch of drunks.

Ha, ha. Now bud light would be funny! It could be the rays or noise. She has never been scared during an electrical storm before, so I am not sure if the field would cause it.

Ya, go buy one. I want to see how others react too.

My dogs enjoy watching the bug zapper nearly as much as I do.
Ofcourse the dogs would enjoy more if they drank the same amount of beer as I do during the bug zapper nights.
