I put them on my 04 not long after I got it. Personally, I think they were a waste of $40 for me. They're only slightly brighter than stock in my opinion. The light seems to be a little crisper, but that all I've really noticed.
I had them on my last truck. Won't waste the money. I can't even see bothering with those useless "fog" lights Ford uses. they aren't good for anything unless you aim them up into oncoming traffic. I guess you really need them to be cool, though. Everyone seems to drive around with their "fog" lights on all the time. I took mine off and sold them. My 165 watt KC Dayliters do the trick!! Maybe I should drive around with those on???
Here is my honest opinion on them. (ps. I got a wee 150, not a SD). Silverstars are great for rural roads or country driving, they are brighter and "whiter". In the urban areas, where there is a lot of ambient light, don't waste your money. I found that I could see farther down the road and that it projected a wider angle and I was able to see the tree line better. (For you city slickers, when driving down a country road, keep an eye out on the tree line, Bambi likes to make surprise appearances).
Jake00 if you remove the grill the access to the fogs are not hard. On my 03 the oil cooler blocked the right fog light. with the grill in place. I have had them in place for two years and I would replace them with Silverstars if I needed to replace them. I drive 85 miles to work mainly two lane and rual interstate. For my money they are worth it.
SilverStar lights are better.
But to get the full benefit you also have to install a relay and heavier wire to the lights.
The stock 16 guage wire does not get enough amps to the lights.
Also the relay will save your headlight switch from certain death from under sized wiring on a circuit drawing to many amps.
thanks for all the info. How much does autozone sell them for? Also was reading something online that the sylvania silver star headlights don't have a filiment?
I replaced my foglamp bulbs with 9005s and saw a trendous difference. My '05 Ex has 9008 bulbs which according to Sylvania...WIL NOT be offered in a Silverstar. It has something to do with DOT regulations and coating not being allowed on the new 9008 (or H13) bulb.
I understand that the same brightness (not color) can be obtained with Sylvania's Xtra Vision bulbs as the Silverstars.
For the record, I had Silverstars in my former Bronco and liked them. A friend with a '99 F250 (247,000 miles) likes the Silverstars but seems to replace them alot.
SIlverstars or Xtra Visions are not higher wattage, so you should have no reason to cahnge the wiring. I know some of the knock-off bulbs claim to be higher wattage without drawing more power, but I know from personal experience that this is BS.
I'm going to pick up the 9007 bulbs and do them on a relay with beefed-up harness. I'll try to find the fogs too, do they need a heavy harness or are they plug and play? Since I'll have the grill out I might as well put in a Tru-Cool tranny cooler too, and save the old cooler for thr P/S. Ok, off to Wal-Mart for the bulbs....
At least on my '05 Excursion the 9005s went right in and have had no heat issues or the like. I wanted to use the 9005s on my Cobra, but understand that harness will not take the extra power usage. In my Ex I have been very careful to check the wiring and lenses and there is no heat in the harness and the lenses only get warm.
As I wrote above, the Silverstars are brighter but draw no more power. I see no reason in upgrading the harness to use these bulbs.
