Hey i have a 79 f-150 4x4 it currently has a 351M in it im doing a complete restoration on the truck top to bottom. My dad has a 428 that has to be rebuilt i plan to put on automatic transmission on it prabley a c6. The 351M also has a c6 but due to changes the 351M tranny has a different bolt pattern on it so it wont bolt up to the 428. I found a c6 tranny that would fit on a 428/390/360. btu it was out a car so it has a different tail shaft housing. I will have to tear the tranny down to change to tail shaft.
Sounds like a lot of work and money just to get that 428 in your truck.
New, radiator, fan shroud, motor mounts, Tranny, the list goes on.
If I was in your shoes I would rebuild that 351m but use a 4.00 crank.
See that way everything will still mate up. and you have a strong engine at half the price of rebuilding that 428.
I have a 400 in my 77 F250, I had it pro built for $ 1500.00 not incl R&R it puts out over 350hp.
Ya I know it will take hours on hours to just get the engine and tranny ready. My dad once had the 428 engine in his 76 but his swap was 100% easier being the truck already had a 360 in it, and the 428 didnt have to rebuilt.
If you only want performace then go ahead and put the 428, but if that is'nt exacally what your looking for then just rebuilt the 351 and put a good cam, carb, headers, and exhaust. Then you'll have a pretty good performing 351. If all you want is to open her up every now and then. Stay with the 351.
good luck
