428 into Bronco

O.K., this time for sure! Here goes: I am planning to swap a '68 428/NP435 into a '79 Bronco which presently has a 351/C6. The 428 and 4 speed currently reside in a '79 F250 4x4 and both have married NP205 transfer cases so I'm hoping it will be mostly a bolt in swap. I know I will have to change motor mount towers, clutch/brake pedal assemby, clutch pivot arm, mount and linkage, radiator, exhaust, tranny tunnel part of floor pan (for shifter) and at least the transfer/tranny adapter if not the t-case. Which is where myquestion comes in. Can I keep the transfer case where it is or will I have to move it forward or back to accomodate different tranny/engine lengths? I'm hoping that the adapter allows for any differences in length, so that I won't have to move the t-case and change drive shaft lengths. I would like to access the vast body of knowledge and experience I have seen evident on this board, so any comments , tips or warnings about things I've missed, etc., would be most appreciated. thanks for your time. P.S. I sure hope this post works.

Your post made it - for the rest of your question, I have no idea getting a tape measure and measuring the length of the transmission will tell you something.

the four bolts holding the t case to the cross member are slotted, you shoule be able to get all the adjustment you need out of them, if you need any at all

ford built 2 different lenghth c-6 tailshafts. 1 was 5 1/2" with an alum. adapter for transfercase and the other was 8 1/2" with the cast adapter. in my experience with the 4 sp conversion it was the same as the short c-6.all the mounts will work at the trans crossmember, but the transfercase side mount has to move forward or back.alot of times the holes are already drilled.when you use the fe engine framemounts you have to drill the top bolt holes. all the parts out of the truck will work good, at least you have a sample in front of you.driveshaft lengths will depend on transfercase position.

i would take as much out of the F250 as you can. anything that has to do with mounting the engine including crossmembers, motor mount towers, and radiator. it should all bolt into the bronco, and make your life alot easier.

Thanks Guys. I am planning to take a whole bunch of reference pics of everything in both the Bronco and the truck before I disassemble anything, too. No matter how obvious it seems when you take it apart there's always something that you can't remember when you go to put it back together, that is, until it doesn't work. And then it becomes obvious again.

don't forget about headers, if you don't want to use them you could find a set of log manifolds out of a 65-66 thunderbird (the outlet for the passenger side log is by the 3rd cylinder not the 4th), they flow like crap like lose 30-40hp on a good motor crap but they fix a lot of clearance issues though

Thanks for the tip. I hope to find or possibly make some headers for it, but it's good to know what my options are.

From a stock 73-77 F150, headers for any 360/390 FE will work just fine in fitting, as long as it's designed to go around the NP435 and NP205. The NP205 will bolt to the side of the frame in the same spot, so no driveshaft mod is necessary. Your task is make sure you have the frame perches in the right spot. The NP435, and NP205 and intermediate adapter housing will all locate where they're supposed to go, which means all linkages will line up correctly. The only issue you'll have is the perches. As mentioned drilling the two holes is all that should be done. The only other thing I thought of that you might need, is the pull chain from the firewall's accel. pedal to the carb.
