1996 5.0 in a 1991 need help/advice!
Hello All!
My 1991 F-150 Nite 5.0 just put a rod through the side of the block.
I have a complete 1996 5.0 (from pan to intake) that I would like to put into my truck.
Is this a bolt in deal? Or do I need to do some work to get this thing running?
I also want to bore this engine .30 over (high miles) and add headers and a mild cam.
Will I need to reprogram the computer? What can I do to get the most bang for my buck?
I have a $3500.00 budget and want to get the most for my money.
I’ve thought about killing the EFI and going with a carb setup, because a carb setup is cheaper to build and easer to work on. But it’s time I learn to hotrod a fuel injected engine.
I need all the help and advice that I can get! So if you can help me please do!
Thanks!

Welcome to FTE!
c_rossman is correct... the roller cam in the 96 motor uses a steel gear, you should be able to find a distributor pretty easily... the firing order is different between the two motors as well. If you go more than 265 lift on the cam, you'll want bigger injectors, I think stock is 18 lb/hr, I would try to find 23lb/hr.

Thanks for the help!
I have the distributor, wiring harness, computer and fresh air intake that came out of the ’96 truck.
Can I just use the ’96 distributor? And if not can I just use the gear from it? </O
I’m not to sure on the differences between mass air and speed density. But I thought that the ’96 was a mass air unit. If it is, can I use this computer and ring harness?
And do you know of any books or web pages that cover this conversion?
I’m sorry that I’m asking so many questions. But I’m lost when it comes to EFI.
If this was a carb truck I would be on the road already instead of searching web sites and Catalogs for information!
