I just bought this truck its in good condition. It shift very hard about 15mph can't get it shift after that. I don't know what tran it has are what to do. On the column it has overdrive. 14 bolts on the pan. I've found a cap with like 4or5 wires that have been cut back up lites wireing harness? Can't find any vacuum lines (don't know if theirs should be one are not) Runs rough thinking vacuum leaks. It says 5.0 302 on sticker buy the radiator but The fireing order on the intake is for a 351? Any help would be appreciated.
86 overdrive would be an AOD. Doesn't use a vacumn modulator for shifting. Uses a TV valve and cable. Cause of not shifting could be tv cable not adjusted properly, stuck valves in valve body, stuck govenor, broken sprague in trans, many other causes. You need to get it checked out at a good trans shop.
Ditto to ronclark's post - assuming that this is a carbed engine, not EFI. I have 2 trucks with the carbed 302/AOD drive train. Also, my truck's shifting changed pretty dramatically after getting the engine running properly.
Went to the junk yard and looked at some trucks, My bar (down swift bar?) has been bent badly. Think this needs to be replaced. I find alot of jerryriging done to the carb. The cruise control cable has been taken off and is hanging beside the throtle linkage, dosent seem to want to go back in place. Funds are for and few between so I forced to try and fix my self. Love this truck, cheaper to buy tran from junk yard are take to shop?
Y, not sure of the name, but there is a bar that controls downshift when we mash on the gas. I'd think the junk man would let the bar go go a couple bucks as they typically don't inventory that type of item. IMHO, I'd keep fixing the cheap easy's and re-evaluate the problem.
If you replace the TV rod it has to be adjusted properly to make the trans shift right and not burn up. Search the forums there was an adjustment procedure thread not long ago.
