I am in the market for a ford expedition. I am getting rid of the dredded 4.0 sohc explorer with the chain problem. I like fords and don't want another unfixable problem like this again. Is there anything like this with the expy that I should be aware of to look out for. I will be looking at the 2000 to 2003 models, something with a 3rd row seat in it. If I had know about this web site before I bought the exp., I didn't think nothing of the motor sounding like a diesel. Any heads up on which motor to avoid on the expy or anything the general public doesn't know about. Thanks guys.
Recently when I was looking to buy a nice pre-owned Expy the one thing everyone agreed on was not to buy a 4.6L. While there are people that own these vehicles and are happy with them, I was advised against that particular motor because I intended to tow a boat.
I ended up with an '01 Eddie Bauer and it is a fantastic vehicle to drive. Although the air ride suspension feature can be pricey to repair (I've been told), it makes the truck handle like a Cadillac.
Add the heated seats, moonroof and other goodies and you have a real nice vehicle.
I have an 03 w/ a 4.6 and haven't had "to many" problems...But it I were you, I'd stay away from the 03's. Apparently many more people have had problems them with. ALSO, DO NOT buy an expy with CONTI tires....
