(Disclaimer: I am not responsible for your safety during this procedure...However this process is safe.. )
1) Loosen lugs on wheel - jack truck and put FRAME on jackstands with enough height to keep the wheel off the ground - DO NOT put jack stands on axle... Lower the frame onto the jackstands.
2) Remove wheel, drum, wheel bearings and wheelhub.
3) Remove the 4 nuts / bolts that hold the drum brake backplate assembly to the spindle. Then slide off drum brake backplate assembly and use some rope to hang it up out of the way.
3) Place the jack under the axle and put some upward pressure on the axle - but not enough pressure to raise the frame off of the jackstand.
4) Remove the shock.
5) Loosen the two 1/2" or 9/16" bolts that has a clip that retains the top portion of the spring. Only remove one of the bolts so that you can clear the spring with the clip.
6) Using about 18" of 1/2" drive extenions and the 1-1/8" Deep well socket - loosen and remove the big nut that holds the spring onto the axle - you will need a 18-24" breaker bar for this one...
7) now SLOWLY!!! lower the jack which UN-COMPRESSES the Spring. Once the spring is uncompressed it should just pop out, if not just push down on the axle and this will give you enough room to remove the spring.
Tools - if it is a 2wd truck you will need:
1/2" Socket
9/16" Socket
1-1/8" DEEP well 1/2" Drive socket <---- VERY IMPORTANT - you might need to go buy one
3/4" Socket - 1/2" Drive
1/2" open-box wrench
9/16" open-box wrench
3/4" open-box wrench
3/8" and 1/2" Ratchets
Lug Wrench
Needle nose pliers
A socket to remove the Wheel bearing nut (can't remember the size...)
That should do it! Let us know how you make out...
when i took mine out i just got the weight off the front end and removed the two bolts holding the top of the spring then the shock and then the large bolt that holds the spring to the ibeam and pivot arm. the large bolt is a big pain, use penetrating oil on everything you put a wrench on. if its just the spring you want you can do it without removing the rolling portion of the suspension.
FWIW: For safety, I run a chain through the spring and chain the spring to the axle or control arm. I have had more then one spring that was just sitting in the coil bucket with a broken or rusted off tab or retainer and if it pops out before it is fully uncompressed it can give you a world of hurt.
