my steering wheel makes horrible noises when turning like its cracking and clanking. it even honked the horn a couple times when turning, real embarassing. so i took off the cover and found the three rings totally twisted and the plastic retainers broken. i looked even further in the column with a flash light and found some kind of bearing that was twisted off, pieces of that fell to the floor over time.I don't want to pay hundreds to have it fixed when i can try and do it myself, thats why im here to ask if anyone has done this job before. after i get the column from the salvage yard for a couple hundred how should i go about installing the new column? it has a tilt mechanism and cruise control, its the XLT kind. any help would be greatly appreciated. i will add some pictures as soon as i can so you can see what im talkin about.
