I put a banks turbo on about a year ago. It was worth the money. I turned fuel up exactly as banks instructed and she runs with almost no smoke. The one concern I have is the EGT climbs while pulling my 24 ft 5th wheel up hills. I normally have to back off (to be safe). Will removal of the muffler (its the one banks supplies with their kit), make a difference on the EGT and allow me to push harder up the hills. With the muffler removed is there significant exhaust noise? It seems majority of noise comes from engine compartment....Any input is appreciated!
I beleive that the banks muffler is a flow through, so I can't see it restricting that much to increse the EGT. I know that when I straight piped my rig, she was loud, but I don't have a turbo. I have heard that the turbo will quieten down the sound. I am wondering, have you changed your down pipe from the turbo to allow more free flow? This might open it more and allow your EGT to go down. Just my thoughts.
You might consider looking into an intercooler. I know ATS makes a kit for these trucks. Also, water injection is supposed to help with EGT's...just dont get carried away with it. I have not personally tried either water or an intercooler on my turbo IDI, but am just passing on what I have read on this and the other diesel board.
I belive only the factory turbo trucks suffered from the restricted downpipe. With a banks turbo kit you should not have to worry about this to the best of my knowledge.
The banks muffler is completely seethru I beleive but it takes away the echo of strate pipes by making the exhaust expand in the muffler instead of just flying right through which makes a huge difference in sound.
I used to have a strate pipe on my NA but the police made me put on a muffler. You can see right through it but it sounds like crap. Honestly the best pipes I have heard were my strate pipes on my NA turbo, no cakle like a gasser, just a smooth loud roar.
An intercooler would be my best choice for EGTs but also very expensive.
My 92 came with an ATS turbo and 3" straight pipe that uses the stock routing. With the windows up the engine noise is louder than the exhaust and the engine does not drone. The only time it seems loud is when the engine is decealerating from over 2000 rpm. It'll rap pretty loud if you're in a tunnel then. Other than that the noise level is pretty reasonable.
Some Banks setups do have a baffled muffler on them. Only way to check is to look under there and see if the inlet and outlet are lined up. I've seen a lot of them that are offset, so you know they aren't straight through.
Are you still using the stock Ford air intake over the battery? I reworked my intake on my 86 with a 7.3 and ATS turbo and dropped the EGT to the point that I can pull most hills with a heavy load without backing out of it. The engine (reman 7.3 turbo complete) is still at factory fuel settings for a couple more months till the warranty runs out.
I have a 3" downpipe into a 3" see through muffler that is about 14" long then into dual 3" stacks. The engine has a nice sound when pulling, but the over 2500 decel does have a jake brake sound to it. It is not that loud though, I like it. When the window is down the end of the exhaust is under 3 feet from my head.
my 88 7.3 with banks turbo had stacks with no mufflers for 13 years, and the egt would only go to around 900 degrees pulling a 17k lb machine/trailer combo, but it was LOUD !! i mean hear it from 1/2 mile away loud, like louder than my mack truck loud.
One thing I really miss about my strate pipes is the good ol jake brake sound when you downshifted. When there was something like a gaurd rail or barrier for the exhaust to echo off of then you would swear a Pete was comin round the corner.
Because of my friendly local authorities I had to rig up a 2 1/2" muffler off a 6 cylinder farm tractor to get my ticket removed. Stupid *******s ruined my truck.
Water injection will decrease EGT's about about the same the intercooler, however, the H2O/ methanol injection kit is only 500, intercoolers are sure to be more.
The muffler will not really help at all in silencing the engine noises- the turbo already does it. The only thing the muffler will do is slow gasses down a little bit and deaden the turbo spool noise... which I love...
