I have a 1986 Ford f150 with 302 efi, 4 wheel drive with an AOD 4 speed overdrive transmission. The transmission was working fine before I installed a different engine. Now it will shift from first to second but no further. Is the transmission done for? Can anybody help me?

What type of different engine did you install? Was it another 302? Did you yourself install this new engine or did you have a shop do it? Post as much info as you can regarding this problem that you can think of regardless of how quizzical it seems. The more info you can give us the better!
The engine was installed myself. I used to have a shop myself so I know what I am doing. I put back in the exact same engine that came out. I took the transmission pan off and it was very clean inside. Would it be possible that the engine hit the tourqe converter and broke something inside the transmission? I thought I was very careful. The transmission has 164000 miles on it, but it was working perfect and has had excellent care.
I would try to adjust the governor cable which tells the tranny when to shift it runs from the tranny to the throttle body on the upper efi plenum all you have to do to adjust it is push the metal clip in up by the throtle body while someone holds the gas pedal to the floor and then its adjusted properly , i think the metal clip is spring loaded so push it in push the pedal down and let the clip back out

Man there could be 500 things that could have gone wrong. I don't think you broke anything inside the torque converter. The T.C only has three parts within the housing. It sounds to me like the valves and fluid passages for the 3rd and 4th gears may be blocked. Depending on vehicle speed and gas pedal position, the automatic transmission will sense these variables and open and close specific valves which allows fluid to flow along certain passages. These passages lead to specific valves which allow fluid to flow to a specific piston. This action disengages one gear while engaging another by allowing hydraulic pressure to actuate a piston which engages that gear. It could also be the seals, around these pistons which actuate gears 3rd and 4th, may have worn out enough to cause leaking to a point that they can't maintain proper pressure. If so gears 3rd and 4th won't engage. It could be the series of clutches between each gear may have failed. Automatic transmissions are so complicated it could be many things. Hell it could even be the shift silenoids for those gears.
I don't mean to beat around the bush. You may very well have knocked something loose in the transmission when you did this project. I wish I could help you out more than I have.
Thanks! I will probably go ahead and replace it. It has alot of miles on it. It was working so good before I replaced the engine that I did not think I would have any trouble with it. I should have went out and got a different pickup.
