what transmission do i have?
Please help identify my transmission.
I have a 1996 Ford F150 4x4, 5.0L V8 with 'electronic automatic overdrive transmission'. It has a 1, 2 and D on the shift selector and the overdrive button on the end of the shift lever. It has a transmission code U.
Is this transmission an E40D, AOD-E, AODE-W or 4R70W? Is there a label or tag that would show this somewhere? Thanks for your help.

I collect info from LOTS of places, so I have no idea where I picked up some of it. Most of the transmission codes can be found at Chilton's online.

It's possible that your trans is AOD-E, AODE-W, and 4R70W as they are names for the same transmission. Now there is differences in the AODE. The "W" is for "wide" ratio. 4R70W is a newer name or possibly number from manufacturer. I put a shift kit in a '95 5.0 w/ MAF. It was AODE-w and/or 4R70W. The E4OD is the larger transmission. It's internal parts are similar to C6. The AODE is more similar to AOD or C4. You can tell by the shape of the pan between AODE and E4OD.

I'm just as confused
My '90 F150, 5.0L has an overdrive trans without push button. The gear selector has P, R, N, OD, D, 1. It was recently rebuilt and I was told that it is an AODE trans. I have been trying to find a performance module for my truck but I can't get a straight answer as to what kind of transmission is on my truck. Any clarification would be helpful.

You're wasting you time, there is nothing a "chip" will do for this vintage truck that you can't get for free. The power upgrades topic is regularly beaten to death on this forum so you should find lots of info on what you need to do if you spend a little time reading on this forum.

No.. that's not true at all and it's badly misleading to suggest so.
The AOD is an all mechanical 4speed automatic and the AODE is the same transmission with an electrically locking torque converter. The 4R70w is related to these only in that it uses the same external case but nearly all internal parts are different and this trasnmission is completely computer controlled, so you simply cannot put an AOD or AODE where a 4R70w was or put a 4R70w in to replace an AOD and expect it to operate normally without any other changes, it just won't happen.

F150's with 5.0 engines and E4OD
We have worked on F150's with 5.0 engines and E4OD transmissions. Most are 1994 through 1996 models with the optional towing package. The F150's with 5.8 engine used the E4OD from 1989 through 1996.
