i was thinking about how the guy i bought my truck from told me that he had replaced the transmission today and so i wanted to look and see if i could tell what he had put in. judging by the drip pan its pretty clear that its an e40d and i was wondering why he may have put this in instead and what benefits it has over the other kinds of transmissions.
The way I understand it, the e4OD is supposed to get better gas mileage. I think I read that in some previous posts. HOWEVER, the earlier versions of the e4OD leave lots to be desired. Ford did some upgrades to later versions that improved reliability though. These upgrades should be included in rebuilds of the earlier versions. Search the e4OD on this forum and you'll be amazed at what you see.
The Silver Anniversary 91 Bronco came stock with the E4OD. I just had mine rebuilt with all the updates from Ford and it works great. The shifting pattern has improved from what it was and it just feels more solid. Was the one put in yours rebuilt?
Yeah, the E4OD was the OEM tranny in that truck. Thats the most likely reason why he put one BACK in there. Desertdave has it right though, the improvements that were made after the 1992 model year really help with shift pattern and longevity of the unit. If it was a remanufactured unit, it most likely has all of these updates in it. Its hard to find reman. kits now that don't have all of the upgrade hardware in them.
It was put in as it was a stock replacement as posted above. If all the mods have been done you can look forward to a long life together. Maintain the filter change cycle @ 60K miles per the manual. The transmission can also be improved with a shift kit as I have done. I'm @ 245,100 as of today. Good luck and enjoy your Bronco.
well the guy i bought it from said he had it replaced in 2000 when the old one blew. i paid just a little bit more for the truck then it would for a new E40D so i doubt he bought a new one. since he got it in 2000 i'd assume that it has been upgraded. ive never heard of a shifting kit, are they expensive?
trans-go and B&M manufacter shift kits for the E40d. Their anywhere from $60-$100 and greatly improves the firmness of the shifts. Instead of a long smooth shift its more of a blip. I have the trans-go on my 96' and love it.
