I think he means immediately removeable, like the 80 on up and Chevy had at 73. I had never tried, but if you take a close look at a Chevy after 73, or a Ford after 80, you will see how they did it, and I see no reason you couldn't adapt a pre 80 Ford to do it, but I would follow Chevy due to simplicity, as the 80 up Fords have a plastic piece to I guess reduce rattle, but isn't really needed to function. You could model it after the 80 up Fords too, and not put the plastic piece in. You likely could get the pivot from a later Ford and make it work.
I did this to my '73. I got the plastic insert and passenger hinge from a '80-86, also take note of how the slot is cut in the gate. Then I used a grinder to make the slot, swapped the hinge onto my '73, slide the plastic insert in and it's done. Just need to pull the support arms off and the gate slides right off.
I tried it without the plastic insert, the gate rattles loud - drove me nuts...
I just converted my 79. I made a new passenger side tailgate trunion, and notched the bottom of the tailgate socket. I made five or six extra trunions, they are billet steel and will need to be painted to match. If you want one email me.
I know this is trying to ressurect an old thread but I'm about to try to make mine removable and would love to see pics of how someone else has done it.
