Anybody heard of a pasta shape known as orzos? They look like rice (orzo is Italian for rice), and it's the key ingredient in pilaf. All of a sudden, only one of our 5 local supermarket chains carries it. Is there some kind of an Orzo Cartel I haven't heard about? You used to be able to get it anywhere.
most people don't know what the stuff is, there for they don't buy it. if something does not sell big supermarkets are less likly to buy it. Try your local Italian fruit and produce store, they will stock it, at least the ones by me do.
maybe they moved it to closer to the soups? I've always has orzo in soups, and even though most stores have soup and pasta stuff together, I've seen a few where they weren't close at all.
Another place to look is the specialty food aisles. Where they have Mexican, Italian, Greek, etc. In my stores, I can never find peeled tomatoes in the vegetable aisle, just crushed. They have it in the specialty aisle with the other italian foods. It's funny that I can find 5 brands of olive oil with the other oils, but they have one brand in the specialty aisle.
Never could figur out some of the reasons they stock aisles the way they do.

To make you shop (and hopefully buy) more! That's why milk is always way in the back.
No, I've actually asked, and some stores have just stopped carrying it, though I didn't ask why. I can find 'em, I'm just curious why they are getting scarcer. And I've made homemade pasta, too, but orzos would be a little labor intensive!
