Can butter mold?

I've had this piece of butter that had be sitting in a plastic container for about a week and half without really being touched. Well today I decided that I wanted to eat some of it, when I opened the container the butter had this purple spot on it that looked like mold .

Obviously I didn't eat it and threw it out, but I just got to thinking, is it even possible for butter to mold? (I was under the impression that it couldn't) If it wasn't mold anybody know what was actually growing on the butter, I've never seen purple mold before, it was about 3/8" round.

I would guess somebody made a butter and grape jelly sandwich. First the jelly was spread, then the person stuck the knife into the butter and got jelly residue on the stick of butter. I have never ever seen mold grow on butter.
The butter would prolly need to be at room temperature for 6 days also, if mold had any chance of starting/

Yes it can mold. We had some mold at fishcamp this summer. Just scrape off the mold and enjoy. What do you think is on the good cheese.

My rule -- if I'm worried -- out it goes.

Yes butter can mold -- almost anything can mold. Usually it's green, so what you saw might have been jelly, but so what. Now you won't wake up in the middle of the night wondering if you're going to die!

As for cutting off mold -- that does work for cheese. Not sure about butter since it's softer.

Well it's to late to go back now anyways, but the butter is long gone I threw it out yesterday when I saw "the spot", so I can't really scape it off. To those who said it might be grape jelly, it's not. I live alone and I don't keep jellys of any sort at home. Thanks for your replies though, guess this will just be one of those weird things that'll probably never happen again.

I did think it was funny though how in your second sentence in your OP you said you "wanted to eat some of it." Were you just going to grab a spoon and start eating your butter like icecream...or were you going to put it on something? HAHAHAHA. Hey, don't be hatin' on us butter-eaters. Yes, I do eat butter.

Anything with bacteria on it will mold. So, if you touched it when you put it in the dish, you transferred bacteria from your fingers to the butter.

If you make a point to never actually touch cheese, by holding the wrapper and not the cheese, it will take much longer for it to become moldy.

i was actually trying to look for an answe, most people say due to the oils and salts in it, it would take a longtime for the butter to grow mold.....getting rancid tasting, for sure though

maybe snowbunny is right transfering bacteria might get mold on it faster

Good idea not to play with your food, but mold is just a fungus, not a bacteria.
It comes from spores just like mildew or mushrooms.

Mold-Help.org: The life cycle of fungiThe life cycle of fungi

Mold is nothing, rancid butter is the worst!
THAT is caused by bacteria, It decomposes into butyric acid.
Guaranteed to make you wretch..

This is why butter is (or was before refrigeration) salted.

Well I dont think my toast and butter is looking to appetizing now...sigh

I have seen butter grow lil white scaley things and have always been taght when in doubt throw it out.

My question is Why do men and kids always bring thing to their wife or mom and say "does this smell bad?" Is tehre something special about our sense of smell?
It is often something like chunky milk or green bologna and one look and I can tell its bad I do not need to smell it. Why do they not see the same thing?

My sense of smell is just fine thank you!

If I ever tried that with any female in my lifetime I probably would have been wearing whatever it was......

You've never ate large amounts of butter raw? Sometimes I just pick up a stick and start chompin away.
