Question Sterling

Would the 8 bolt wheels off a '79 Dana 60 rear fit a Sterling full float rear with disc ? I think it's a 2002 rear, maby a little bit older. I know the wheel studs are metric, can they be changed or are the holes drilled in the axle metric too ? I've found this axle in a friends junk yard, it's complete & he wants 600$ for it if I bring back the gears & locker which I wouldn't need anyways. Is it worth that ? Do they make 5.13 for this axle ? I haven't measured it but it came out of a pickup so it might work under my '79 ?

Mark,
They do make 5.13's for the Sterling. The spring perch width will probably be different but you've got the skills to move those no problem. Studs can be pounded out and replaced, new studs cost $40-$50 for a set (16).

I don't think the bolt patterns are the same though, as Ford went from the standard 8x6.5 pattern to an 8x170mm pattern in 99. Chevy is still using 8x6.5 but Ford is not. Also, just my opinion here, but I think $600 is too much for a Sterling axle, even with discs. If it was coming with the locker I'd do it but not when you have to pull the locker and gears.

Hope that helps a bit.

Sure does. He told me that my wheels might not work. Sure looked like a easy way into disc though & I need to buy gears anyway.

It's a dana 60. I'm thinking if I have to buy gears and a locker anyways I might as well try to find a f.f. disc axle of some kind. What about a Dana 70 did any of those have disc with single wheels ? Do they even still make Dana 70's ? I was also looking at a Dana 80 with disc but it was set up for duals. I didn't ask how much though, probably too much seeing how he was going to rob me on the Sterling.

D70's can be had for cheap. I don't know if they're still making them but I got mine for under $100 out of an E350. If you get one disc brakes can be added easily enough. I know there are D70's out there with discs though they're not common. Just keep your eyes peeled. A Sterling axle will work too as long as it's not 99 and or newer (I believe 99 was the cut off).

I Believe the 82-93 E-250 Long wheel Base and E-350 Vans also had D-60 HD's (35 spline axle shafts) and they can be had for cheap money as well...

Did they make a Sterling with disc before they changed the wheel patern ? If I were to find a Dana 70, I seem to remember some "sheep" talk about a better 70 case ? How do I id. it ? & what year / vehicle would I find one under ? Do all 70's have the 6.5x8 wheel stud patern that I'll need ?

Well Mark the only differences in the D70 cases we deal with are the regular cases vs. the D70U. The "U" was used primarily in delivery vans (mid 70's to early 80's) and they're easy to identify because the bottom of the case is smooth like an egg vs the regular one which looks a lot the bottom of a D60. The reason the U is ideal is because if you do a lot of offroad junk it'll allow your diff to slide over rocks without getting hooked up. Seeing as how you aren't building your truck for offroad abuse this wouldn't matter. I went with a regular D70 and shaved the case for better clearance. To my knowlege all the D70's out there will have the right wheel bolt pattern for you.

Steve mentioned the D60-HD. They can be found if you look around or you can even upgrade your D60 by boring the sprindles and popping in 35 spline shafts. My only issue is if you're running some big horsepower you're still dealing with the smaller ring gear which is not as strong as the 10.5" gear in the D70.
