Onboard air

Who has put an onboard air system on their truck? I want to air up tires when returning home from the beach (truck and trailer), inflate/deflate airbags and want to add a train horn.

I have installed an Oasis XD2000 compressor and an 8 gal tank with universal quick couplers in front and rear bumpers as well as ARB lockers in front and rear differentials. The compressor is powerful enough to run air tools and inflate a 35" tire from 0-45 psi in little over a minute. Air bags will be installed when I get my camper. You can find the compressor at onboardair.com or oasismfg.com

Go to the Dieselstop.com. They have an excellent write-up on doing it yourself.

569104, how/where did you install yours?

WOW! about a thousand dollars for that Oasis compressor??? That seems a bit steep.

I put the Firestone airbag system on mine. It was simple. I have not added a tank though. They said it was not that much harder to do though than the bags and compressor.

Lnd Svyr,

I mounted the compressor on the frame under the passenger side door and my 8 gal tank fit nicely under the bed on the passenger side space between rear tire and cab. Like it was made to go there.

zenitram,

Yeah the compressor is not cheap and not for everyone...but depending on how much you intend to use it and what for... the added cfm, duty cycle and time savings can be worth it. Its like having a shop air compressor on your truck. It was worth it to me.

Good point.
It seems that these have a high current draw. Does the normal idle handle the electrical needs when in use? I'm guessing that you don't want to use this when the truck is off.

One other question; Since you mount it under the truck, how do you keep the intake filter clean? What about when it rains, or gets muddy, sandy...

Thanks

zenitram,

The oasis does have high current draw when compared to most of the others, however, because of the higher volume it runs considerably less and completes the job a lot faster. Normal idle on my truck handles the electrical needs just fine in most cases. I have dual batteries (in parallel..12v) and dual altenators but under heavy use I use my Aux Idle Controller to increase idle to maintian max voltage/amps.

I do not advise running the compressor without the truck on...hard on battery(s). To cure the muddy, sandy & water problem I routed intake filter and crankcase breather to a protected area away from the elements, ie. under the hood and/or high under center of the truck next to body. Also, I built a 3/8" steel skid plate/splash guard/rock protector for the compressor and mounted it so the compressor is above the bottom of the frame.

Hope this helps.
