Rear grinding & vibration when accelerating 97 Expedition

I have a 97 Expedition Eddie Bauer 110,000 miles. When I accelerate, almost all the time there is a grinding/vibration coming from the rear somewhere. Even going into reverse to park it may grind. What can it be and what cost may be involved? its driving me up the wall, dont even want to press the gas, have to take off slowww but it still does it off and on. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Start with changing out your rear-diff fluid and go from there.

Pay special attention to the oil being drained. Is it full of metal shaving? Is it milky? Is there actually fluid draining out? These can all be potential rear diff problems.

Thanks. I had a leaking gasket in the rear axle in the middle but that has been fixed. is the rear differential fluid elsewhere?
