I've got a "grinding" noise coming from the left front end. I think it is the wheel hub/bearing, but am not sure. It does not make the grinding sound all of the time (just started yesterday). I pulled the whell off this evening and turned the rotor by hand. The noise/vibration comes every couple of turns or so. I am wondering if it may be the CV Joint.
Anybody have any experience with this type of problem? It's a 2002 F-159 4x4 screw; about 87K on it. Had 55K when I bought it nearly 2 years ago. Changed out to 16" wheels with 285/75/16s (33") tires which may have changed the stresses on the front axle assembly.
It could be the bearing/cv/hub
Good chance it isn't the bearing.
Is your 4wd working properly? When you put it in 4wd does it still make the noise or not?
IF it makes the noise in 4wd, then it's the cv shaft.
IF it doesn't, then good chance the vacuum actuated 4wd is acting up. The solenoid could be bad, water in the vacuum lines....
Still made the noise in 4wd, but didn't really have much room to get the truck moving more than 10mph. Will have to get to a longer stretch of beach to test it at 20mph or so.
I was thinking that it could be the shaft. I pulled the wheel off and turned the hub by hand. Got the sound/feeling that splines weren't meshing properly - if that sounds right.
I've got a friend who owns a garage. Will probably just take over there and pull the danged thing apart.
The problem turned out to be the hub/bearing assembly which is non-serviceable. Had to buy a new one.
The "grinding" sound was the rotor rubbing on the brake calliper when the wheel yawed back and forth while turning.
I believe the extra stress of having 33" tires on it when the shocks went bad was too much for the hub/bearing assembly. The left front shock was the worst of the four when I replaced them a few months ago.
