This is my first post, although I have been reading articles from this site for a while now.
I have a 2007 F150, with a 9.75 rear end.
First Issue - I have noticed that when I start off from a stop position, and when I am turning, there appears to be a "grinding" or "vibration" sound coming from rear end area...it is very brief and when I straighten out it is fine.
Second Issue - I thought it may have been the pinion. I replaced the front pinion and seal and noticed that fluid was very low. Filled it and it didn't get any better. Now there is a "whine" when I am going above and more than 30 mph...of course onlywhen I press the pedal, when I let off, it is gone....
Here's what I have had done:
Replaced all the bearings in the rear end, including the axle bearings.
1 - "Whine" is still there
2 - "Grinding/Vibration" is still there.
Shop says that the whine is most likely because there is some slight wear on the gears.
They don't know what the grinding is.
Anyone here have any other ideas about what the whine could be? or the Grinding / Vibration?
The grinding when turning is the limited slip clutches. The whine could be too much backlash or incorrect pinion depth. When you replaced the bearings did you make sure the shim stayed on the pinion under the large bearing? Did you install a new crush collar and set the pinion bearing preload? Did you check the backlash when installing the carrier? Did you make sure the carrier bearings were installed all the way? Did you replace all of the bearing races and make sure they were fully seated into the housing?
Thanks for your reply.
I brought it into a shop and they did all the work. With regards to the "whine", he believes it is because the gears are slightly worn....I don't think so....
But i need to be able to go back to him to fix it...
